Featured Articles Facebook reported its fiscal Q1 2013 financial results, which ended March 31, 2013. The strangest thing took place during the earnings call: Facebook's execs, COO Cheryl Sandberg, CFO Ebersman and the Zuck himself, all sounded like adults - focusing on their business, their strategies, their game plans and how these game plans are affecting and are likely to affect the various ends of Facebook's revenue streams. I once heard the late writer Norman Mailer say that he would know the apocalypse was near, "When they play MUZAK during electrocutions." While it might not be a similar sign, the news that billionaire Warren Buffett now has a Twitter account certainly has set off a flurry on the Internet that might rival news of the coming of the end of days. All of the rumors about who President Obama will nominate as the next head of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) have come to an end. He is expected to formally unveil venture capitalist and former cable TV and wireless trade association head Tom Wheeler as his nominee to replace FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski. Yesterday we published an article that focused on BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins suggesting that the tablet market will die out in five years. We did not of course put much stock in that particular assessment. We suspect that research firm IDC probably doesn't put much stock in it either. The company has just come out with its Worldwide Quarterly Tablet Tracker report and all indications are that the tablet market is growing by leaps and bounds. Twitter is proving to be an integral part of many operations, from newsrooms to marketing and beyond. But sometimes, some need a chance to just "take back" what might have been said previously. Stonly Baptiste looks to have a new Web-based solution with the recently unveiled Retwact, a tool that essentially allows users to retract a tweet. One of the ways I stay on top of industry trends in the U.S. is by monitoring what is going on in the government sector. The reason is that not only are governments really big spenders on IT in general, but due to their very nature they spend a lot on the creation, storage, management and analysis of an extraordinary amount of structured as well as unstructured data. State and local government IT professionals, like their colleagues in the enterprise world, are currently staring at a data explosion. A question regarding these big challenges is whether they have a strategy for using all of the capabilities of "Big Data" to improve decision making and meet mission objectives? One Gigabit-per-second Wi-Fi is coming to market with Cisco Systems' products for hospitals, universities, law firms and other organizations. The portfolio is aimed supporting high-bandwidth services like HD streaming video, Web conferencing, and data backup and transfers within the enterprise. Nokia has long been known for its stellar smartphone cameras and Carl Zeiss camera lenses that it uses in most of its higher end smartphones. Nokia's latest camera efforts involve the 41 megapixel camera technology introduced with its PureView 808 smartphone, a Symbian-based phone that is more concept than anything else. We have one on hand and the camera is truly awesome, though the smartphone itself leaves much to be desired. A new research report conducted by the Yankee Group across a very large population of users makes a rather bold claim. It is forecasting that iOS will retain its dominant position among current Apple users and will in fact increase it over time - enough so to ultimately dominate the field again.
