Ultimate Pokemon Pet Cosplay - Umbreon Dog

Posted: 31 Mar 2014 04:00 AM PDT

When people say they’re doing a bit of Pokemon cosplay with their dog they usually just dye them different colors, or strap some ill fitting scraps of fabric on them and call it a day.

But this lucky(?) dog got to cosplay as Umbreon the right way- with a really cool looking full body costume! The costume, which includes a full head mask, was created by DeviantARTist leafeon-ex, who apparently owns one of the world's most patient dogs.

Umbreon dog may not be able to see all the adoring Poke-fans fawning over her, but she has the satisfaction of knowing that if she steps into the pet costume battle arena wearing this crazy cool getup she’s sure to catch all the awards.

The Beauty of a Deformed Frog

Posted: 31 Mar 2014 03:00 AM PDT

Brandon Ballengée is an “artist-biologist-environmental activist.” He has been studying the increasing instances of deformed frogs, particularly those with extra limbs, which are seem more now than should happen by chance.

Ballengée, whose research focuses on population declines and causes of deformities in amphibians, has been collecting these tiny critters from all over the world for more than 10 years. He uses enzymes to make their tissues transparent and injects colored dyes to make their bones, tissues and deformities stand out. The specimens are then posed, imaged with a high-resolution scanner and printed with water-based ink, according to Metro. His work provides an unprecedented view on this environmental issue -- and invokes empathy towards amphibians by making them look beautiful.

The pictures are from Ballengée's book, Malamp: The Occurrence of Deformities in Amphibians and are also part of an exhibit at Museum Het Domein in Sittard, Netherlands. See more of them at HuffPo Green.

These Motorized Shoes Are Designed to Keep You from Falling

Posted: 31 Mar 2014 02:00 AM PDT

When elderly people fall, the consequences are often disastrous. B-Shoe Technologies, an Israeli start-up company, has developed a shoe that it claims will reduce the incidence of falling.

When it detects that the user has lost his/her balance and is about to fall backwards, the motorized heel drives the shoe back, restoring balance. In short, it performs a corrective maneuver faster than an elderly user might be able to.

The company has produced 3 pairs of B-Shoes. They're now being tested in hospitals in Israel.

Do you think this invention would work?

The Most Expensive Burgers in America

Posted: 31 Mar 2014 01:00 AM PDT

You have to wonder why a restaurant would offer a super-expensive hamburger, when a $5 burger on a real plate is gourmet food to most Americans. One reason is the publicity it brings, and the other reason is that some people will actually buy them just to show off how much they can spend on one. Take, for example, the Absolutely Ridiculous Burger from Mallie's Sports Grill & Bar in Southgate, Michigan.

Weighing in at 338.6 pounds, Michigan’s 540,000-calorie “Absolutely Ridiculous Burger” features 15 pounds of lettuce, 30 pounds of bacon, 30 pounds of tomatoes, and 36 pounds of cheese. The burger takes 22 hours to prepare, and it requires the strength of three grown men to lift the patty into the oven. According to the menu, “There is ABSOLUTELY no reason for this burger. But if you order it, we’ll make it, and you figure out what to do with it!”

The Absolutely Ridiculous Burger will set you back $1,999. Not all the pricy burgers are big, but they’ve each got something that makes them unique. First We Eat has a list of seven costly burgers, ranging from $120 to $5K. -via Digg

Tom And Jerry Short Remade With CGI Anime Girls

Classic animated series like Tom & Jerry are often studied by animation students so they have a better understanding about timing, staging, and character animation.

The short in this particular study is Down Beat Bear from MGM, 1956, which is heavy on the musical numbers and just the thing to show off your sense of timing as an animator, and the cutesy characters on the anime side are from a video game series called Touhou Project.

This surreal side-by-side short was created by YouTube user dfj688 using an animation program called MikuMikuDance, which explains all the dancing but very little else about this strange project.

45 Simple Safety Rules For Living Life & Not Dying

Posted: 30 Mar 2014 11:00 PM PDT

Amy found a notebook in which her then-8-year-old-son had written out safety rules. And they are pretty good rules, if a little unclear at times. There are illustrations, too. Some of my favorites:

#5: Never go near a snake where it will hipmotis you.
#8: Never get sqasht by a giant.
#15: Never go to Harry Potter World ware you'll get shot by Voldamort's wand.
#21: Never get chomp't up by a dinosar.
#30: Keep your dey's on my hot glord.
#39: Look and see wats behind you if someone if going to kick you.
#43: Never go in the purple potty.

I will have to keep that one about the purple potty in mind. The others are just as funny. Altogether it sounds like a complete roundup of the type of things an 8-year-old boy thinks about. The illustration goes with #21, and #30 has sparked all manner of speculation. Read the rest at Amalah. -via Metafilter

Liquid Boiling and Freezing

Posted: 30 Mar 2014 09:00 PM PDT

(YouTube link)

There’s not a lot of documentation on this experiment, but what we know is that the unknown liquid is both boiling and freezing. Actually, if you go by the visuals, it seems to rock back and forth between those states quickly. The pressure inside the glass was lowered, which causes the temperature to drop. But it also drops the boiling point of the liquid. Where the freezing point and the new, low-pressure boiling point meet is called its triple point. It’s freaky to watch. I kept waiting for the glass to break, because that just seems like what should happen. -via Viral Viral Videos

Matt Groening’s Student Profiles

Posted: 30 Mar 2014 07:00 PM PDT

Back in 1989, when The Simpsons were still a short sketch inserted into The Tracy Ullman Show, and Matt Groening was known as the cartoonist behind the comic Life in Hell, he illustrated a booklet for Apple Computers. In between ads for computers, there were profiles of student types that everyone recognizes, unless the type was you. And you were one of them, admit it. You can see nine such profiles at Dangerous Minds.

Super Cute! Cats and Dogs Meeting Babies for the First Time

We have photos of our dog meeting our kids when we brought them home from the hospital. The first time, his expression was along the lines of "What is that thing?" But he's loved them from first sniff.

Lots of dogs and cats are this way. The above video compilation from Tiger Productions shows our furry children meeting our fur-less children for the first time.

Suspended Animation in Clinical Trials

Posted: 30 Mar 2014 05:00 PM PDT

Scientists and doctors the UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, are planning a clinical trial that cannot be scheduled, with subjects that cannot be selected or screened, nor can they give informed consent. They will be ten patients with normally fatal knife or gunshot wounds which leads to massive blood loss and subsequent heart failure. They call the technique “emergency preservation and resuscitation,” which we know from science fiction as suspended animation.

The technique involves replacing all of a patient's blood with a cold saline solution, which rapidly cools the body and stops almost all cellular activity. "If a patient comes to us two hours after dying you can't bring them back to life. But if they're dying and you suspend them, you have a chance to bring them back after their structural problems have been fixed," says surgeon Peter Rhee at the University of Arizona in Tucson, who helped develop the technique.

The technique has been used on pigs in experiments, with very encouraging results.

The pig's heart usually started beating again by itself, although some pigs needed a jump-start. There was no effect on physical or cognitive function.

The technique will be used on ten candidates who are brought to the emergency room, then the technique will be analyzed and tweaked, and then on ten more patients. Since informed consent will be impossible to obtain, there is a way to opt-out online. So far, nobody has. Read about what exactly will happen when the time comes at NewScientist. -via Metafilter

Action Movie Kid - A Video Series That Brings Imagination To Life

Dreamworks artist Daniel Hashimoto doesn’t take his work home with him, because he’d rather spend time playing with his son James and using a little movie magic to turn James into the world’s youngest action movie star.

Now James may not do all of his own stunts, and he may have the power of visual effects programs like After Effects helping him look more heroic, but their video series called Action Movie Kid is about the power of imagination, and bringing James’ superhero dreams to life.

From daring grappling gun stunts to sweet lightsaber swingin' moves, James is ready for a leading role in upcoming movies like Die Hard: With A Kid or The Bourne Adoption.

7 Inconsequentially Cool Things From Movies That Took Way Too Long To Film

Posted: 30 Mar 2014 03:00 PM PDT

Some filmmakers will go the extra mile -or an extra year- the make their movie perfect. Sometimes it’s because they did not realize how difficult or time-consuming an effect would be, and once some time is spent, it doesn’t seem right to abandon the process (the law of diminishing returns). For others, it was part of their vision, and had to be just right. Some of these budget-busting effects ended up being fairly inconsequential to the finished movie. For example, the drop of blood in The Incredible Hulk was an important plot point, but the effect took way too long to get right. Was it worth it?

For some reason though, the company behind that shot, Image Engine, spent upwards of a year tweaking that scene to get it just right. Now I'm no expert on making movies, but I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that if Image engine had spent the budget and time that, that scene ended up consuming on something else, like maybe the Hulk kicking Abomination in the sack, the audience would have appreciated it more than an artistic shot of a drop of blood in freefall.

The other effects in this list all have a story behind them as well. Read about them all at Dorkly.

TMNT Movie Trailer Spawns The Michaelangelo Meme

A trailer for Michael Bay's controversial Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot movie finally made its way onto the interwebs this week, and while it relieved some of the anxiety felt by fans of the franchise it also created a whole new meme- the Michaelangelo.

Mike’s odd appearance in the trailer was immediately likened to that of Shrek, then other folks jumped on board the Michaelangelo meme train and created some hilarious visual masterpieces sure to make net surfers say cowabunga.

Coke + Mentos (and Nutella!)

Posted: 30 Mar 2014 01:00 PM PDT

(YouTube link)

An Italian YouTuber combines Coke and Mentos and funnels the reaction into a condom. You’ve seen it before, but he’s adding Nutella, which, I don’t know, is supposed to make it different or something. The reaction is what you’d expect, but his presentation is what makes the video special. Valluan provided a translation:

New, incredible experiment with Coke and Mentos! But we’re gonna try something new today: the energy and vitality of Nutella! And as always, we’re gonna use a condom, but this time it’s gonna be mango-flavored. Let’s start. First thing: let’s take some Nutella and put it on the top of the bottle, creating some kind of Nutella cap that will be fundamental for the Nutella-Coke-Mentos reaction. Good, now we open our condom and we put Mentos in it. Not just one, two or three, but five Mentos, since we found out during previous experiments that 5 is the best quantity of Mentos in terms of maximum reaction. Now we’re going to seal everything with some tape. Perfect: Nutella, Mentos… now we’re gonna let the Mentos drop on top of the Nutella, and that’s enough for… and here’s the reaction! Incredible, guys! Coke and Mentos are reacting… it’s a world record! Look at it! It’s a world record! Look at it! IT'S A MIRACLE!!! WOOOOORLD REEEECOOOOOORD!!! COKE, MENTOS AND NUTELLA WORLD RECOOOORD!!! GOOOOO ITALYYYYYY!!!!!! NUTELLA, GUYS, IT’S THE PERFECT INGREDIENT!! YEEEEEESSSS!!!!

So I still don’t know what Nutella adds to the experiment, but he likes it, almost as much as he like Italy. The real comedy comes in when you try to add English captions to the video. The audio translation is delightfully clueless. -via reddit

Animated Short Shows How To Read Cat Body Language

Cats are kinda crazy and unpredictable, or at least we think they are because we have a hard time reading their body language and understanding how their postures and behaviors reveal what they’re actually thinking.

Now, thanks to animator Cindy Suen and her adorable animated short Cats Communication, we have a guide to the visual language of felines.

It's not the most definitive source on the subject, but it reveals enough information so you can avoid becoming a target of kitty rage the next time you encounter one of these furry freaks in the urban jungle.

European Word Translator

Posted: 30 Mar 2014 10:00 AM PDT

“How do you say…” peppers every conversation when you’re trying to negotiate a different language. The European Word Translator fills in the blank, so to speak. This application uses Google Translate to give you your word in many European languages. Just enter a word (or two), and they will come up on the map. In the map above, the word is “cat.” There are some caveats:

Translations are generated by Google Translate. Some may be inaccurate or use non-European (e.g. Brazilian Portuguese) words.

Just one translation is provided for each word; watch out for words with multiple meanings!

The Google Translate API does not yet translate into all European languages.

* If Google Translate cannot find a translation, it simply shows the English word. This may be the case for the starred words on the map.

Still, it’s fun to explore, and may be useful for those studying the relationships between European languages. -via the Presurfer

Jimmy Kimmel Asks Kids If They Know Any Naughty Words

Posted: 30 Mar 2014 09:00 AM PDT

(Video Link)

We recently posted a video featuring a guy asking his three year old nephew to recite all the bad words he knows, many of which were unsurprisingly butt related.

But Jimmy Kimmel wasn’t satisfied with the results- he felt that this particular kid's list of curse words didn't fairly represent the bad words known by all kids, so he decided to head out to Hollywood Boulevard to see what kind of filth was running through the mind of L.A.’s children.

Kimmel's scientific research into the subject yielded some rather surprising results, including the fact that most kids think dumb is a bad word, and when these kids let loose it's enough to make a sailor blush!

Restoring the Chateau de Gudanes

Posted: 30 Mar 2014 08:00 AM PDT

You can save money and have a great house if you buy a fixer-upper, but only if you are prepared for the work it needs. Australians Karina and Craig Waters went to France and bought the Chateau de Gudanes, a 300-year-old 94-room neoclassical mansion in which no one had lived for many years. Restoring the chateau to its historic grandeur is a long-term project, which they are documenting on their blog, Chateau de Gudanes. Get an overview of their story and see wonderful photographs of the architectural details at Messy Nessy Chic.

What It's Like to Be a Professional Line Sitter

Posted: 30 Mar 2014 07:00 AM PDT

(Photo: SOLD)

If you want a really hot product--like the latest smartphone or high-end sneakers--then you may have to stand in line if you want to purchase it on the first day that it's released. Those lines can get really long. If you don't have time for that, then you can hire someone to stand in line for you.

Robert Samuel of New York City used to work for AT&T. He lost his job, so he created a new one. Tiffany Yannetta of Racked interviewed him about his work. How did Samuel get started in the line-sitting business? He explains how it all began by sitting in line for 19 hours for an iPhone:

I wanted to supplement my income because I used to sell iPhones, and this time I wasn't going to be able to sell them and make a big commission check. I live a few blocks from the Apple store on 14th Street, so I said, "Let me wait in line for somebody else and make them happy."

The guy that hired me cancelled and said he wasn't going to use me—he was just going to get it online but that he was still going to pay me. He paid me $100 and I resold the spot and made another $100, and then I called my friends and told them to come on down, because I just made $200 standing in one spot on a weekday afternoon.

They came down and took up spaces, but after a while they got tired and went upstairs to my house and hung out, and I ended up selling one of their spots. I also sold milk crates for $5 a piece that I had in my house. At this point, the line was getting long and people didn't want to stand, and some people didn't want to sit on cardboard on the floor, so my milk crates came in handy at $5 a pop. That's $325.

Samuel later expanded his business, which he calls SOLD: Same Old Line Dudes, Inc. He regularly employees 7 people as line sitters. He charges $25 for the first hour and $10 for every subsequent half hour.
