Where Does a Woman Go to Get Effective Armor in This Town?

Posted: 24 Sep 2014 04:00 AM PDT

How exactly is this armor supposed to protect a woman embarking on a dangerous quest in a fantasy universe? Well, you're missing the point. It is supposed to be, uh, a fantasy. It's not realistic, as Jeremy Whitley and M. Goodwin point out in this selection from Princeless Book 1: Save Yourself.

In this graphic novel series, Princess Adrienne plans to rescue herself instead of waiting for someone to save her. So she needs to be properly equipped for any contingency.

But she has no need to fear this armorer's wares. Stjepan Sejic has already explained how chainmail bikinis work.

Seven Things You Probably Didn't Know About <i>Fight Club</i>

In January of this year, Miss Cellania posted 25 Facts About the Movie Fight Club. Here are seven more little-known Fight Club facts, without repeating any of the previously featured list. Thus, this list is different. It's special. It *is* a beautiful and unique snowflake. (NSFW due to language.) -Via Tastefully Offensive

Designer Garbage

Posted: 24 Sep 2014 02:00 AM PDT

This intriguing idea plays upon a most outlandish insecurity that you probably never even considered. While it's true that your garbage collector knows a lot about you, like what you got for Christmas, what kind of pets you own, and when your child was toilet trained, it's highly unllikely that any of the neighbors ever look at your garbage. My town even has a regulation that all household garbage be tied in bags. My guess is that few, if any, customers expressed interest in paying for this service. Found at Bad Newspaper.

Stingray Surprise in the Maldives

Posted: 24 Sep 2014 01:00 AM PDT

Tourists feeding fish from a dock in the Maldives were surprised by the sudden appearance of a hungry stingray. The large specimen swam up to the tourists close enough for them to touch. Undaunted, they petted him and continued to throw fish food into the water.

How would you react to a close encounter with a large stingray, in or out of the water? Would you keep your distance from these lovely creatures after the death of Steve Irwin raised awareness of their rare but possibly lethal reaction to being threatened? -Via Tastefully Offensive

This Is a Beard Beard

Posted: 24 Sep 2014 12:00 AM PDT

Beardmaster James Myrick is an artist with his own facial hair. We’ve previously seen several of his truly beardly acts of beardism. Most recently, he inscribed the word “beard” into his beard, resulting in a beard beard. This inspired me to pose to him an even more beardly challenge:

The Story of One Incredibly Scary Hiking Trip

Posted: 23 Sep 2014 10:00 PM PDT

There are some details that go along with hiking that people seem to forget. Namely, do not do it alone. As much as it can be zen, depending on where you go, bad things can happen. Also, take into consideration all the things that can naturally happen when one is exposed to those elements and you realize, hiking it a tad more dangerous than most people make it out to be. But outside of a few mountain lion stories here and there, it is all usually pretty mild. Well, this story goes a little Blair Witch, so be prepared.

The Unresolved Mysteries page on Reddit has a hiking story right now that is something right out of a horror movie. For me to tell you too much will ruin the fright factor of the story, but I will tell you this straight away: It is super creepy and sounds like the makings of a perfect horror movie. Don't worry. It is nothing so upsetting that you will read it and need to bleach your mind (this is Neatorama, folks), but it is a creepy little unsolved mystery that is well worth taking a few minutes to read about.

I was going to go for a hike today, but a bike ride in the city seems like a much better idea now.

Researchers Use Twitter to Analyze Each State’s Most-Talked about Food

Posted: 23 Sep 2014 09:00 PM PDT

It’s not necessarily the most popular food, but it’s the food that more people in that state are tweeting about than any other. In Texas, we talk about brisket because, well, brisket is awesome. Miss Cellania’s Kentucky is tacoland. In Wyoming, people want to share their thoughts about watercress.

The Twitter4Food research team at the University of Arizona published an online paper and a set of interactive data visualizations to share the results of their study of 3.5 million tweets published between October 2013 and May 2014.

You can search the United States to see who has an interest in particular foods, such as sheep brains (a traditional Southern delicacy).

You can also create heat maps for the entire world to see what regions are tweeting about foods, such as this map showing tweets about Scotch eggs.

The Real Leg Lamp

Posted: 23 Sep 2014 08:00 PM PDT

Leo Bonten had to have his leg amputated. And he wanted to take his leg home to use it as a lamp. Really. His request stirred up some controversy in the Netherlands. At first the hospital said no.

However, Bonten was told that he could only get his amputated leg back after it had been buried to follow the letter of the law, which was costly never mind a bit ridiculous. Bonten refused and was initially refused the amputation by the hospital. It was eventually sorted out, but Bonten had to fight for a right he already had to keep his own leg and make the lamp he wanted. “The hospital didn’t have a leg to stand on,” says Bonten jokingly.

The leg was preserved by pathologist Frank van de Goot, and make into a lamp by designer Willem Schaperkotter. You can see it at Improbable Research. They also have a screenshot of Bonten’s eBay ad for the leg lamp (he said he was in dire financial need), but it was pulled because the eBay forbids the sale of human body parts. There's also a TV show with a discussion of the medical ethics in the story, if you understand Dutch. -via Metafilter

These People Made Their Amusement Park Photos Even More Amusing

Posted: 23 Sep 2014 07:00 PM PDT

(Image Link)

Photos taken on amusement park rides are only worth taking if guests actually want to buy the pics, and people usually only want to buy them when they’re screaming their heads off or posing for a carefully orchestrated photo-op.

(Image Link)

Staged ride pics are so much fun that people often ride the ride as many times as it takes to get the picture just right, and they’ll even bring in their own props along to help make the candid pic even less candid.

(Image Link)

The folks in this hilarious collection of trolled amusement park photos staged these pics with an important purpose in mind- amusing people around the world via the interwebs.

(Image Link)

These fun loving folks did a great job of trolling their (mostly Splash Mountain) amusement park pics, and hopefully their efforts will inspire others to come up with their own perfectly planned ride pics.

Clever Improvised Comic Book Made by 26 Different Artists

Posted: 23 Sep 2014 06:00 PM PDT

(Photo: Portland Superheroes Coalition)

Kirk Damato of BuzzFeed had a brilliant idea. He recently attended the Rose City Comic Con in Portland, Oregon. While there, he asked artists to participate in a game that would result in a comic book story.

The process were simple: an artist drew on the whiteboard. Damato then gave the whiteboard to the next artist, who erased it and added his or her own content. As a result, each artist saw only the previous panel, resulting in a bizarre but amusing story:

Brazilian Man Spots Giant Anaconda, Grabs It By the Tail

Posted: 23 Sep 2014 05:00 PM PDT

YouTube Link

In a video that proves, among other things, that terror can be universally understood by all, no matter what language in which it's expressed, this group of Brazilians in a small boat spot a massive anaconda. As the woman on the boat proceeds to loudly voice her discomfort with the situation, a man on board pursues the yellow anaconda and grabs it by the tail, presumably so it can be better seen on the video they are shooting. (If I'm not mistaken, at 1:54 I think the woman tells him he's sick in the head.) What an amazing sight! Via Geekologie.

<i>Raiders:</i> A Study in Film Greatness

Posted: 23 Sep 2014 04:00 PM PDT

Filmmaker Steven Soderburgh altered the film Raiders of the Lost Ark, for educational purposes only, to study the staging of the film. He had it rendered in black and white, and removed the soundtrack. Then mood music was added that has nothing to do with the original soundtrack. The result is an amazingly beautiful version of the movie, reminiscent of a silent film or one of the old-time serials it was designed to imitate.

So I want you to watch this movie and think only about staging, how the shots are built and laid out, what the rules of movement are, what the cutting patterns are. See if you can reproduce the thought process that resulted in these choices by asking yourself: why was each shot—whether short or long—held for that exact length of time and placed in that order? Sounds like fun, right? It actually is. To me. Oh, and I’ve removed all sound and color from the film, apart from a score designed to aid you in your quest to just study the visual staging aspect. Wait, WHAT? HOW COULD YOU DO THIS? Well, I’m not saying I’m like, ALLOWED to do this, I’m just saying this is what I do when I try to learn about staging, and this filmmaker forgot more about staging by the time he made his first feature than I know to this day (for example, no matter how fast the cuts come, you always know exactly where you are—that’s high level visual math shit).

It’s hard to actually think about all those things when you’re just enjoying the movie. You already know the story well enough that you don’t need the dialogue, but someone who’d never seen it before would still enjoy Raiders without color or dialogue. -via Time

Rocket And Groot Are Taking Over The Marvel Universe One Cover At A Time

Posted: 23 Sep 2014 03:00 PM PDT

This November, two beloved characters audiences didn’t know they liked until the Guardians of the Galaxy movie came out will be starring in a series of alternate covers that pay homage to classic covers of Marvel past.

It’s the role of a lifetime for Rocket and Groot, who are cast as everyone from Tony Stark to The Hulk on these fabulous homage covers, illustrating that a raccoon and a living tree can actually play some pretty diverse roles.

These covers should be just the thing to further propel these formerly second string superheroes toward the comic book superstardom they so richly deserve.

How To Make Ferrofluids

Posted: 23 Sep 2014 02:00 PM PDT

Ferrofluid, by definition, is a fluid that contains a magnetic suspension. We have posted them sculptures and videos with them before, but to most people, the idea of ever being able to play with the stuff seemed unlikely. Well, guess what? You can make your own ferrofluid, and do all the playing and experimenting with it that you want.

Heck, maybe you will even end up making a scultpture with the stuff that we will feature one day on this site. Life is insane like that. You never know.

Declarations of Independence

Posted: 23 Sep 2014 01:00 PM PDT

Grant Snider of Incidental Comics continues to enjoy and share the intricacies of life with a toddler. It’s astonishing to watch them develop and become distinct personalities, and so many of them follow the same path that other parents can remember and relate. The process of seeing them learn about the world around them and discover their ability to manipulate it is almost magical, but at the same time chaotic and exhausting for parents.

Blueberry Pancake and Red Velvet Corn Dogs

Overlook: An Intricate Modern Woodcut

Posted: 23 Sep 2014 11:00 AM PDT

Paul Roden and Valerie Lueth have been working on a woodcut called Overlook for two years now.

A dense forest huddles tight, with groves expanding outwards, upwards, growing ever further away. The trees move with the motion of a wind, or not; some are rigid & straight, some rustling & reaching. At the middle of the print, the treeline dips down and spreads up and out into a great stretch of rolling fields and forests.

The original artwork is finished, and they are working on carving the “key” woodblock. Next, an additional three or four woodblocks will be carved for the different print colors. Limited edition color prints are available for pre-order from Tugboat Printshop. -via Laughing Squid

20 Things You Might Not Know About <i>Pulp Fiction</i>

Posted: 23 Sep 2014 08:30 AM PDT

Pulp Fiction was released in the United States in October of 1994. Can that movie really be twenty years old? Why yes, as a matter of fact, it debuted at Cannes in May, and was released in several countries before Americans saw it. Want to know some other cool facts about Pulp Fiction? Here’s a sampling:

6. THE MOVIE COST ONLY $8.5 MILLION TO MAKE.

Five million went to the actors’ salaries. It made that all back in its first week at the U.S. box office (the film pulled in $9.3 million the first weekend of release).

20.TRAVOLTA DIDN’T REALLY INJECT THURMAN IN THAT SCENE.

The infamous scene in which Mia is stabbed with a very necessary adrenaline shot was stressful enough, so Tarantino took off some of the pressure: the needle was inserted, and then Travolta pulled it out. The scene was reversed in post-production so it looks as if Vincent Vega really is plunging that syringe into her. Movie magic!

Disney Movies in Chronological Order by Historical Setting

Posted: 23 Sep 2014 08:00 AM PDT

Aish at Disney's New Groove posted this chart of Disney movies in chronological order according to their historical settings. She posted it with the following note:

"(Excludes most of the package films. Some films, eg The Lion King, are impossible to pin down exactly and some, like Aladdin and Treasure Planet, are anachronistic, so these are estimations. A few have been split into 2 if there is more than one time period in the movie, and sequels have been put together.)"

Can You Imagine Getting A Massive Hug From A Lioness?

Posted: 23 Sep 2014 06:30 AM PDT

I am not quite sure who this Jay Hawk Daily guy is, but he posts some amazing videos to his YouTube on the regular of him doing stuff that most of us would either love to do, or die in fear and refuse to do. Take, for example, this video of him showing up and hanging out with a lioness who just cannot seem to stop giving him love and hugs. 99% of us will live our entire lives never knowing what a lioness hug feels like (and being somewhat grateful for that), but to see the bond these two obviously have is amazing. She just acts like a giant kitten around him.

(YouTube Link)

My rational sense of self-preservation knows better than to be jealous or envy him, but it is still wonderful to see just how gentle and loving wild animals can be towards certain humans. I have said it before and will say it again. I often think humans could take a lesson in humanity away from some animals.

But keep in mind, were this anyone but him, they probably would have been mauled. Never let these vids lull you into a false sense about what these animals can do. Just saying.

A Bay Side Dwelling That Doesn't Block the View

Posted: 23 Sep 2014 06:00 AM PDT

There are plenty of beach shacks out there, but the Window House is pretty unlike anything you've ever seen. This one-person getaway is super cozy -measuring only 10 by 26 feet, so it's not ideal for regular living, but makes a great weekend surf spot. Best of all, the tiny home looks great but doesn't block the view from their neighbors and passersby thanks to the huge windows on each side of the tiny space.
