Twelve Movies for the Next Twelve Months

Posted: 03 Jan 2015 04:00 AM PST

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, while a highly anticipated film release in 2015, won't be the only title that will have fans flocking to theaters this year. There is Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight, due to be released by the end of the year. Mad Max: Fury Road comes out in May. A new James Bond film, Spectre, will be out in November, to mention just a few films of interest.

This article at Huff Post Entertainment names a major film release for each month in 2015, as well as listing other titles of note for that month, along with their corresponding release dates. It makes for a nice schedule for fans who desire to mark their 2015 calendars with movie outings.

The Internet Bought Me a Cuddly Dinosaur

Posted: 03 Jan 2015 02:00 AM PST

Steve Guntrip of Bournemouth, UK, became enamored of a stuffed toy he saw in a claw machine. It was a dinosaur called Mr. Dinosaur from the children’s show Peppa Pig. Over the next few months, he tried to win one from claw machines, or even buy one, but found they were becoming scarce. That only made him want one more.

After lots of research, I came to the conclusion that the dinosaur was no more. It was marked as discontinued on the only website, the official one, which sold it. In a last ditch attempt, I emailed them:

They replied! They actually had some leftover but not enough to put them online. I strongly hinted if they could post me one but they said they were unable. This felt like the end of the road; I do not have very much money at all and while I did adore the dinosaur, bills and rent really must come above cuddly-toy-joy. The cost of the dinosaur was prohibitive but the petrol I’d need to put in the car to get there just made it impossible, especially in the time frame of “we’ll have sold the last of them in a few days”.

So he went to Ask Reddit, and had an adventure raising money to travel to Peppa Pig World and buy one of the few that were left. With the funds in hand, the best part of the story began. Guntrip and his girlfriend Bry documented the trip down to the last detail, in pictures, text, and video, in order to share with his benefactors. The got the last three dinosaurs, one for himself, and two for benefactors who wanted one. You can read the entirely charming saga at his blog. -via b3ta

Pixel: A Mesmerizing Dance and Light Show

Adrien Mondot and Claire Bardainne are artists and performers who developed Pixel, an amazing visual display incorporating both dance and light projected onto the stage and dancers. The 11 dancers involved in the hour-long production seemlessly move with the light, appearing to interact with it like it's a living creature.

Jaws-Inspired Baby Bed

Posted: 02 Jan 2015 11:20 PM PST

via SutekhRising/reddit

A Jaws-inspired baby bed that looks like a shark eating a boat? Surely there is such a thing. What loving parents wouldn't want to keep their child save by instilling a healthy dose of fear of sharks and expensive hobbies such as boating?

By the look of that crying baby, we're going to need bigger diapers soon ... and in just a couple short months, they'll surely need a bigger bed. May we suggest the proud parents choose something completely different then, perhaps the clown bed from The Simpsons?

I have that curse, too, but I developed a workaround by taking a nap every day. That didn’t go over too well in the time clock world, but it has become a sacred ritual for this blogger. This comic is the latest from Justin Boyd at Invisible Bread. -via Pleated-Jeans

Man Finds the Turn Signal Lever of His Old Car inside His Arm

Posted: 02 Jan 2015 08:00 PM PST

(Photo: Jesse Bogan/St. Louis Post Dispatch)

In 1963, Arthur Lampitt of Granite City, Illinois crashed his Pontiac Thunderbird. The car was totally destroyed and Lampitt badly injured. Among other problems, he had a broken hip. But Lampitt recovered, married his girlfriend Betty, and raised their 4 sons together. He's now 75 and retired from a career in insurance and appraisals.

About 10 or 15 years ago, doctors found a foreign object inside one of his arms. X-ray images indicated that it was a slender rod about 7 inches long. It didn't appear to pose a problem, so they left it alone.

Recently, though, it began to hurt Lampitt. So doctors operated on him to remove the object, whatever it was.

The object was the turn signal lever from his old Thunderbird. During his accident more than 50 years ago, it must have become embedded in his arm, which healed over, leaving the rod encased in flesh.

Seth Green Gave His Friend James Gunn The Ravagers For Christmas

Posted: 02 Jan 2015 07:00 PM PST

Seth Green doesn’t shy away from his geeky side, he embraces it like any good geek should, and part of Seth's embracing of his inner geek means he gives out some amazing handmade presents.

It seems Seth enjoys creating custom action figures, which will come as no surprise to anyone who has seen his Adult Swim stop motion show Robot Chicken, so for Christmas this year Seth gave good friend/director James Gunn a set of custom Guardians of the Galaxy action figures.

The set doesn’t include the Guardians, who already have way too much merch out with their faces on it, but rather features Star-Lord's old crew The Ravagers.

They came complete with custom packaging, and with five proofs of purchase James can bring home Yondu's best friend Von Spears! -Via Nerd Approved

Dad Knocks out Son's Loose Tooth with Golf

Posted: 02 Jan 2015 06:00 PM PST

Phil Smith, being an efficient sort of fellow, sorted out a way to engage in dentistry and work on his golf swing simultaneously. His son Noah had a loose tooth. So Smith tied a length of dental floss to the boy's loose tooth and attached the other end to a golf ball. All he needed now was to swing his golf club carefully, or else he'd take out additional teeth.

It was completely successful! The correct tooth--and only the correct tooth--came out of Noah's mouth.

Explore the Milky Way with Chromoscope

Posted: 02 Jan 2015 05:00 PM PST

Visible wavelength (DSS/Wikisky)

The night's sky is full of wonders - and we're not talking just the stars that you can see with your naked eye. You'll want to see it in other wavelengths, too. But since we don't have X-ray vision, this is the next best thing.

We've blogged about Chromoscope before on Neatorama back in 2009, but it's worth revisiting. The Chromoscope project, built by Stuart Lowe, Chris North and Robert Simpson in 2009, lets you move across the Milky Way galaxy and view it in different electromagnetic wavelengths: visible light, gamma-ray, X-ray, Hydrogen alpha, near infrared, far infrared, microwave, and radio.

For examples:

X-ray (ROSAT All Sky Survey)

What are those tears in the galaxy? Don't worry those aren't tears in the space time continuum - those black arcs are gaps in the ROSAT spacecraft survey.

Gamma ray (Fermi All Sky Survey)

Hydrogen alpha (Wisconsin H-Alpha Mapper, The Southern H-Alpha Sky Survey Atlas / VTSS / Finkbeiner)

Near infrared

Far infrared (Infrared Astronomical Satellite)

Microwave (Planck Satellite)

Radio (Haslam 408 MHz)

Check it out: Chromoscope | Wondering what you're looking at? This blog post may have the answer.

Here's a Home Alone Parody Music for Ya Filthy Animal

Posted: 02 Jan 2015 03:41 PM PST

David Unger of the band DUM loves Home Alone, and so for his latest parody music video "Get Back," he had a bit of run rotoscoping himself and fellow band members Scott Marsh and Mahreen Khawaja into the movie and adding a bit of blood and gore effect.

Ready for it? In the immortal words of Gangster Johnny "1 ... 2 .... 10!"

I understand replacing Kevin McCallister's (played by the oh-so-young Macaulay Culkin) face with one's own, but doing that to the beautiful mugs of Harry (Joe Pesci) and Marv (Daniel Stern)? Now that's a travesty only filthy animals would do!

Thanks David!

The Uunartoq Hot Springs in Greenland

Posted: 02 Jan 2015 03:00 PM PST

(Photo: Svickova)

You might not think of Greenland, most of which is covered by an ice cap, as an ideal place to warm up. But you might want to try the warm waters of Uunartoq, an island off the southwestern coast. There are three hot spring-fed pools on the island which reach temperatures of 100-140°F. Norse explorers discovered them at least a thousand years ago and put them to good use in that frozen territory. The US Geological Survey says that the springs are not of volcanic origin, but are most likely due to crust friction.

Pulled Pork Waffles Are A Must Have for the New Year

Posted: 02 Jan 2015 02:00 PM PST

Waffles are one of those perfect foods, but what could make them better? How about pulled pork and barbecue sauce? We're not just talking about a savory waffle with pulled pork inside (which would also be tasty), but a waffle made completely out of pulled pork.

Instagram's the Vulgar Chef created this amazing monstrosity and even capped it off with bbq sauce, mac n' cheese, and, of course, bacon. He also made a similar creation with beef hash and a Spaghetti-os pizza that looks like vomit but probably tastes like heaven. Be warned though, as the name implies, there is a lot of foul language at the link.

Donna Douglas, R.I.P.

Posted: 02 Jan 2015 01:29 PM PST

(Photo: CBS)

When I was 7 years old, I developed a crush on a pretty blonde woman who didn't even exist: Elly May Clampett. She was a character on the sitcom The Beverly Hillbillies. Donna Douglas, the actress who played that role, passed away yesterday at the age of 82.

(Video Link)

Douglas was born and raised in Louisiana. She was a teenage beauty queen who left her home state (only to return, years later) for stardom. she was also a farmgirl whose rural skills helped land her a role on The Beverly Hillbillies. The Times-Picayne reports:

Douglas was chosen for the part of Elly May from more than 500 other actresses. She said she felt at ease playing the role because, like her character, she grew up a poor Southern tomboy. The experience came in handy when she was asked during her audition to milk a goat.

"I had milked cows before," she said. "I figured they were equipped the same, so I just went on over and did it."

(Photo: Wdwic Pictures)

Douglas later retired to a home in Baton Rouge. She made occasional appearances that capitalized on her most famous role, often while wearing Elly May's characteristic pigtails and jeans.

Obituaries to Remember

Posted: 02 Jan 2015 01:00 PM PST

These real death notices weren’t written by journalists, but by the witty families of the dearly departed.

James Robert “Beef” Ward, 39, will be sadly and sorely missed by his loving family. Jimmy, who his family affectionately called “Pork” or “Bubba,” was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara Jean “Buffalo Butt” Ward. Survived by his fiancee, Annie “Red” Callahan; father, J. Richard “Old Fart” Ward; sisters, Cathy “Funny Face” Graf, Karen “Turtle” Ward, and “Hamburger” Patty Ward.

-Columbus Dispatch

Edward “Bruce” Merritt. Born April 3, 1951 in North Carolina. His older sisters regularly beat him up, put him in dresses, and then forced him to walk to the drugstore to buy their cigarettes. Bruce never met a stranger, and in many ways was stranger than most. He is survived by one daughter, two grandchildren, two ex-wives, unpaid taxes, and many loyal loving friends.

-Dallas Morning News

Chuck P. Dimmick passed away suddenly on April 18, 2009, while attending a NASCAR Race to watch his favorite driver, Jeff Gordon. Chuck was the Director of Marketing for the Lund Cadillac Group. We are sure he would still want all to know that 0.9% financing is still available on all new 2008 Hummer H2’s.

-Arizona Republic

Theodore Roosevelt Heller, 88, was discharged from the U.S. Army during WWII due to service-related injuries, and then forced his way back into the Illinois National Guard insisting no one tells him when to serve his country. In lieu of flowers, please send acerbic letters to Republicans.

-Chicago Tribune

Arthur (Fred) Clark, who had tired of reading obituaries noting others’ courageous battle with this or that disease, wanted it known that he lost his battle as a result of an automobile accident on June 18, 2006. During his life he excelled at mediocrity. He had lifelong love affairs with bacon, butter, cigars, and bourbon. His sons said of Fred, “He was often wrong, but never in doubt.” When his family was asked what they remembered about Fred, they fondly recalled how Fred never peed in the shower -on purpose.

-Richmond Times Dispatch

Ruth E. Rencevicz, born on August 8, 1927, passed away on September 7, 2008, due to complications resulting from her children making her old before her time. Ruth served her country as a covert spy for the CIA, where during the Cold War she was largely responsible for the breakup of the Soviet Union. At least, that’s the way she told it. Ruth was also very active as a volunteer known to selflessly give of her time by standing on the balcony yelling at kids for “playing that rap music” at all hours of the day and night.

-Akron Beacon Journal

Louis J. Casimir Jr.bought the farm Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, having lived more than twice as long as he had expected and probably three or four times as long as he deserved. Although he was born into an impecunious family, in a backward and benighted part of the country at the beginning of the Great Depression, he never in his life suffered any real hardships. For more than six decades, he smoked, drank, and ate lots of animal fat, but never had a serious illness or injury. His last wish was that everyone could be as lucky as he had been, even though his demise was probably iatrogenic. Lou was a daredevil: his last words were “Watch this!”

Jack Balmer. As this is my auto-obituary, I’d like to write it in my own fashion! I was born in Vancouver on All Saints Day 1931. Apart from practicing dentistry for 30 years, I have also at one time or another been fairly adept as a skier, private pilot, race car driver, vintner, mechanic, model builder, marine aquarist, carpenter, photographer, plumber, scuba diver, writer, boat builder, Olympic team member (coach for a bronze medal), and a Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary member. Since I’ve had a ball in life, with no regrets and nothing left still undone, and since our world seems to be quickly deteriorating, it’s a good time for me to cash in. Goodbye and good luck!

The Bark Knight: Wood Carving of Batman

Posted: 02 Jan 2015 12:01 PM PST

Bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark Batman!

"To me, a chainsaw is just a 3-D pencil," said Thomas Earing of Maple Valley, Washington to KOMO News. "You start scratching in the details. You try to get shadows. It just starts revealing a surface just like a printer would print."

And to prove that statement, the artist and wood carver has a large portfolio of carved pieces he has made over the last decade, including this beauty: The Bark Knight, a wooden carving sculpture of Batman.

According to redditor ninefivezero, the wooden Batman sculpture is 7 feet tall and is made from silver maple. We are slightly disappointed that it wasn't made from spruce, because, yew know, then the Bark Knight's alder ego would be Spruce Wayne.

Despite his ghastly appearance he was a hero, and he had come in search of a spirit awakened and angry. The ghostly rider took to the city streets unaware there was a new force in town, armed with proton packs and a chip on their shoulder towards ghosts, and when the busters and that rider met the air began to crackle with an otherwordly energy...

Doctor: Cancer is the Best Way to Die. Stop Wasting Billions Trying to Cure It.

Posted: 02 Jan 2015 11:34 AM PST

Is it better to die suddenly or slowly?

Being a doctor and a former editor of the British Medical Journal, Dr. Richard Smith is quite familiar with disease and death. And he has reached the conclusion that the best way to die is from cancer - and that's why society should "stop wasting billions trying to cure cancer."

In a controversial blog post over at the BMJ, Dr. Smith explained that, besides suicide, assisted or otherwise, there are four types of death: sudden death; the long and slow death of dementia; death from organ failure, and death from cancer.

When he asked people how they wanted to die, most chose sudden death. "That may be OK for you," Dr. Smith said, "but it may be very tough on those around you, particularly if you leave an important relationship wounded and unhealed. If you want to die suddenly, live every day as your last, making sure that all important relationships are in good shape, your affairs are in order, and instructions for your funeral neatly typed and in a top draw - or perhaps better on Facebook."

The worse type of death, according to Dr. Smith, is the long and slow death from dementia. "You are slowly erased," but with the upside of "when death comes, it may be just a light kiss."

Death from organ failure, such as from respiratory, cardiac, or kidney failure, usually means that you spend far too much of the last moments in your life in a hospital and in the hands of doctors, who may be tempted to "go on treating too long."

So that leaves death from cancer, which according to Dr. Smith allows you to "say goodbye, reflect on your life, leave last messages, perhaps visit special places for a last time, listen to favourite pieces of music, read love poems, and prepare, according to your beliefs, to meet your maker or enjoy eternal oblivion." It's a romantic view of death, Dr. Smith acknowledges, but it's one that is achievable with "love, morphine, and whisky."

Not every doctor, however, shares Dr. Smith's views. "Of course we are all going to die, but cancer takes far too many people far too young," said Cancer Research UK's chief clinician Peter Johnson said to The Telegraph.

POLL: What do you think? What is the best way to die?

 • Sudden Death
 • Slow Death (dementia, alzheimer)
 • Death from Organ Failure

Learn Psychiatry by Watching Seinfeld

Posted: 02 Jan 2015 10:56 AM PST

Studying the DSM-5 to study psychiatry is so out of date. The new hot thing is to learn about psychiatric disorders by watching Jerry, George, Elaine, and Kramer from Seinfeld. Yes, thatSeinfeld.

In a teaching method dubbed "Psy-feld," psychiatry professor Anthony Tobia of Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School teaches third and fourth-year medical students about the various psychiatric disorders using characters from the 90s TV sitcom Seinfeld.

"You have a very diverse group of personality traits that are maladaptive on the individual level," explained Tobia to NJ.com, "When you get these friends together the dynamic is such that it literally creates a plot: Jerry's obsessive compulsive traits combined with Kramer's schizoid traits, with Elaine's inability to forge meaningful relationships and with George being egocentric."

Tobia has even created a database of all 180 episodes of Seinfeld to catalogue nearly all characters in the series and their psychiatric ailments (for example, he diagnosed how five of Elaine's boyfriends throughout the years show symptoms of various delusional disorders).

Learning psychiatry by watching Seinfeld may not be such a crazy idea: in a recent paper, Tobia described how students who participated in Psy-feld found that the exercise to be "enjoyable and [preferable] to the more traditional forms of teaching such as large group lectures."

Now isn't that something for a show about nothing?

Homemade TARDIS Murphy Bed

Stubbs, the blogger at The Stubby Thumb, wanted a Murphy bed but was aghast at the prices. However, there are kits available, so she figured if she were going to build her own bed anyway, she may as well make it a TARDIS.

Not only is it an awesome bed, but she posted the process with pictures for us to enjoy. While you won’t learn to be a master woodworker from the post, you will enjoy the story of how many things can go wrong on the way to perfection. Now her guest room is bigger on the inside! -via Geeks Are Sexy

For the optimal captaincy experience, add Captain Morgan to your Cap'N Crunch. Your ship won't go anywhere, but you'll have quite a trip.
