Snowstorm in the Grand Canyon

Posted: 04 Jan 2015 04:00 AM PST

(Photo: National Park Service)

Last month, we got to see the Grand Canyon filled to the brim with fog. On this past New Year's Eve, snow poured into the Grand Canyon area, making it a winter wonderland. Many of the roads remained open, but driving over them could be hazardous. Thankfully, the National Park Service staff was able to take some great photos of the snow.

We've had Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Eve in rapid succession. You've been partaking of the fruits of your labor and enjoying the festivities with loved ones--at least until January 1. Then you immedately become a disgusting pig who should get some of that blubber off.

(Fowl Language Comics/Brian Gordon)

You want to join a gym? Good idea! Go ahead and visit a commercial gym. Pay your membership fee. Workout once. Then repeat this process next January.

The Five Oldest People in the World

Posted: 03 Jan 2015 08:00 PM PST

Today, Bernice Madigan died peacefully at her home in Massachusetts. She was 115 years and 163 days old, which made her the fourth-oldest person in the world before her death. Madigan’s death leaves only five people in the world documented to have been born before the 20th century. They are, from left to right:

Misao Okawa, born March 5, 1898, Japanese
Gertrude Weaver, born July 4, 1898, American
Jeralean Talley, born May 23, 1899, American
Susannah Mushatt-Jones, born July 6 1899, American
Emma Morano-Martinuzzi, born November 29, 1899, Italian

When these five women were born, there were no airplanes. They may have talked to their friends about the sinking of the Titanic. They lived through two World Wars, the women’s suffrage movement, Prohibition, the Civil Rights Era, and the beginning and end of the Soviet Union. -via reddit

Sleep Inside a "Boulder" in the Swiss Alps

Posted: 03 Jan 2015 06:00 PM PST

Bureau A, a studio in Geneva, Switzerland, created what looks like a boulder on the outside, but is actually a cabin with just enough living space for one. Named "Antoine," the structure, designed to blend in perfectly with the Swiss Alps where it is now placed, is a nod to the Swiss idea of observing the Alps from hidden places within them, according to the design studio. Their site explains,

"The mountains have the power to call for feelings of fascination and fear at the same time. Switzerland has a strong tradition of observing the Alps, living with them, hiding inside them. The awe and the anxiety that this monumental landscape appeals is reflected in the writings of Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz, one of the most important Swiss writers. His novel, Derborence, describes the massive rock fall that covered the pastures of the valley of Lizerne in 1714. Antoine, the main character, survives seven weeks under the rocks before he manages to reach his village, and life.

ANTOINE is a tribute to the alpine experience and to the writer. The small wooden cabin, big enough for the life of one man, is hidden inside a projected concrete rock. Referring to the long lasting Swiss tradition of hidden bunkers, the project integrates the highly urbanised landscape of the Alps. Already described by the French philosopher Paul Virilio in 1975, military architecture conducted by principles of camouflage has, for long, fascinated the architects."

The cabin contains a fireplace, bed, table, stool and window. According to Bureau A, any inhabitant of the cabin accepts the risk of the shelter being situated in an area where it's succeptible to rock falls. Not only is it fit for a Thoreau, but a daredevil Thoreau!

Read more about the cabin and see pictures of the inside at the Bureau A website.

The Conan Pose: A Visual Trope That Appears Everywhere

Posted: 03 Jan 2015 04:00 PM PST

This image by Earl Norem was the cover for a 1979 issue of the comic book The Savage Sword of Conan. Yeoman Lowbrow of the retro blog Flashbak refers to it as "the Conan Pose." Here, it shows Robert E. Howard's most famous character, Conan the Barbarian. It's not a completely original concept. The image of a rugged, muscle-bound man standing proudly, ready for battle and protective of (and desired by) beautiful women is common in Twentieth and Twenty-First Century art.

This early Star Wars movie poster is a widely-known example. Luke raises his lightsaber to battle evil. The beautiful Leia is also ready to fight, but is not the main hero of the scene.

The Conan Pose is a bit preposterous at times. It's a staple of fantasy art and unrealistic fantasies. So it is ripe for parody. You can view other examples of the Conan Pose, both serious and comedic, at Flashbak.

The 2014 Mug Shots Of The Year

The Smoking Gun has compiled their annual list of Mugshots of the Year. The overall “winner” was Robert Burt, whose cleverness was reported earlier here. However, the other 24 on the list are a sight to see. You can look through the gallery, and get some further explanation for some of the more baffling pictures here. Can you guess what the woman in the picture above was arrested for? Yes, you can. -via Gorilla Mask

Brody the French Bulldog Puppy is Tricked Out

Posted: 03 Jan 2015 12:00 PM PST

YouTube Link

Brody Brixton the tiny, twelve-week-old French bulldog wants to show you a trick or two. More like a trick or six, tricks which he learned in only four days! Brody's trick repertoire is a lot richer than that of my two-year-old "puppy" Jasper. He was watching my laptop screen as Brody showed him up in the trick department, and I do believe he was jealous. Or maybe just resentful of his lack of a good teacher! Oops. -Via Tastefully Offensive

If Great Artists Took Selfies instead of Self-Portraits

Posted: 03 Jan 2015 10:44 AM PST

Vincent van Gogh

Self-portrait on canvas? That's a lot of work! What if the world's greatest painters discovered that taking selfies is much easier?

In this tongue in cheek ad campaign for Samsung NX Mini camera, photographer Fredrik Ödman and ad agency Leo Burnett teamed up to imagine what it would look like if Vincent van Gogh, Frida Kahlo, and Albrecht Dürer ditched their paintbrushes and opted to take selfies instead.

Now who said that selfies can't be high art?

Jurassic Sweets

Posted: 03 Jan 2015 10:00 AM PST

Alejo Malia, a creative director in Spain, speculated about what Ben & Jerry's ice cream flavors we could see inspired by the next Jurassic Park movie. The Tyrannosaurus Rex may try to eat you, but perhaps you should bite back into the Donutsaurus Rex.

Or, if you prefer a less dangerous sundae, start with a few scoops of Oreosaurus.

You can view the rest of Malia's ice cream dinosaurs here.

Recycling Penicillin

Posted: 03 Jan 2015 08:00 AM PST

When the first antibiotic, penicillin, was new, it was a very precious commodity. Pharmacologists had to grow an enormous amount of mold to produce even one dose. And considering World War II was raging, the need was enormous, too. But scientists had an ace up their sleeves: they knew that penicillin could be recycled, by collecting a patient’s urine!

After one administration of injected penicillin, anywhere from 40 to 99 percent of the antibiotic is excreted in urine in its fully functional form about 4 hours after administration thanks to our efficient and hardworking kidneys (2). Due to this distinct feature of its pharmacokinetics, penicillin could be extracted from the crystalized urine of a treated patient and then used to treat another patient in the throes of serious bacterial infection just next door. In 1943, just shy of one year after its successful usage in saving the aforementioned woman’s life, the total amount of penicillin that had been produced was enough to treat only a hundred people, and this only if it was judiciously reclaimed and reused (3). Recycling penicillin wasn’t just smart; it was a necessity for such limited quantities of this wonder drug.

Of course, we’ve learned how to produce penicillin faster since then, and other antibiotics as well. Read about penicillin recycling at Body Horrors. -via Smithsonian

New Laws That Take Effect in 2015

Posted: 03 Jan 2015 07:00 AM PST

"It's the law" is a phrase uttered by authority figures everywhere. At times, laws can cause public controversy. Sometimes a lack of laws against certain acts can cause a furor when those acts are committed and condemned in the court of public opinion. Occasionally we hear of odd, archaic laws that are still on the books, though rarely enforced. Such examples are often legislation that seems so odd, it's hard to wrap our brains around it coming into existence.

Whether residents of these states like it or not, there are a number of laws that went into effect with the change of year to 2015. In Massachusetts, residents are now able to order wine online from wineries in other states. Before that law was effective, Massachusetts residents were banned from ordering from approximately 98% of all wine producers. Cheers, Massachusetts!

In New York, all residents must now recycle their old computers and other unwanted tech toys, or they're subject to a $100 fine. More importantly, also in New York, selfies with big cats such as tigers are now banned. Who knows how many lives that legislation will touch? Hopefully the backlash won't result in social unrest.

Have you taken down your Christmas tree yet? Someday, it may come back to you in this form. French fashion designer Sophie Young developed Do You Green, a line of lingerie made from Christmas trees.
