Congress Can Act to Save Antibiotics for Medicine Ask Your Lawmakers to Halt the Overuse of Antibiotics on Factory Farms Dear Indiana, Did you know that 80% of the antibiotics used in the U.S. are given to animals on factory farms to compensate for crowded, filthy conditions? This misuse of antibiotics on factory farms is helping fuel the rise in antibiotic-resistant infections that we've seen in recent years.
If you want to make sure your antibiotics work the next time you need them, then now is a good time to tell your members of Congress to protect antibiotics for medicine, not factory farms. Congress recently re-introduced bills that would curb the overuse of antibiotics on factory farms. It's long past time this kind of legislation passed. Over 2 million Americans experience antibiotic-resistant infections each year, resulting in over 23,000 deaths.
Just imagine if you or a family member got sick — you would want those antibiotics to work. That's why it's so important for Congress to address this public health crisis.
Please tell your members of Congress how important passing this legislation is to all of us.
So how do factory farms play a role in all this? Factory farms give animals regular low doses of antibiotics when they aren't sick. This is done as a shortcut, instead of addressing filthy, crowded living conditions. Some bacteria survive these low doses of antibiotics and become resistant to them, making those antibiotics ineffective for treating infections. Factory farms should not be allowed to be a breeding ground for antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Curbing the overuse of antibiotics on factory farms should be a common-sense solution, not a partisan issue. Take action now to make sure our antibiotics will work when we really need them. Thanks for taking action,
