The Universe’s Best-Dressed Spiritual Leader

Ernest and Ruth Norman founded the Unarius Academy of Science in 1954. It’s a philosophy that includes reincarnation, extraterrestrials, and visions of utopia. From Ernest’s death in 1971 to her own passing in 1993, Ruth Norman led the group as the Archangel Uriel.

In 1978, Ruth, now referred to as Uriel, began to film "psychodramas" with the students. This is when things got next level. These psychodramas were improvised performances of the students’ past lifetimes — spent together in ancient civilizations — for the purpose of healing the karmic damage done in the past. The Unariuns believe if you were able to work out this old baggage through dramatic reenactments, you’d be free to move forward to a better future. But these reenactments weren’t performed on a small stage in plain clothes; they were elaborate productions featuring Uriel and her students in flamboyant garb.

The movies were one part Alejandro Jodorowsky's Holy Mountain, two parts early John Waters, with costumes that would make Liberace and Lady Gaga’s jaws drop. Uriel looked like Endora from Bewitched crossed with Glinda the Good Witch — a septuagenarian goddess in glittery gowns and candy-colored wigs. 200 videos were completed, as well as 80 public access shows; many of them available to view today on demand.

An article at Racked has some background on Unarius, which is still a functioning organization, but mainly focuses on Uriel’s clothing, particularly the costumes used in the films she left behind. It’s a dazzling trip through a girl’s dress-up fantasies crossed with New Age spiritualism. And it has quite a few nifty pictures. -via Digg

Finally! A Back Hair Shaver

Unless you’re some sort of back hair artist, you’ll need to keep to your body lawn properly mowed. It’s a difficult and time consuming weekly chore for most men, made all the more difficult by small razors, a large surface area, and non-dislocated shoulders.

The baKBlade Bigmouth has a 4-inch blade fitted within a toothed comb that grabs and chops the hair. There’s a long handle so that there’s no spot on your body that you won’t be able to shave. The company says that you don’t need to use shaving cream. I guess that’s because it’s actually trimming the hair very close to your skin rather than bringing the blade into direct contact with it.

It could be Kim Jong-Un bending over. Perhaps it has to do with Kim Kardashian's latter (and fatter) parts. It could have to do with Putin's chesty breastal regions. Or it may just be a goat. The goat above, in fact. Some think this little guy's expression says "smug." Some think it's proud. Personally, I think it vaguely resembles a goat version of success kid (one of my favorite memes).

Renaissance Castle Hidden Inside Oregon Home

When Almine Barton bought a normal middle-class house in Newport, Oregon, in 1979, she knew she had to change it to suit her taste. But she left the outside as it was, because she didn’t want a higher property tax assessment. But the inside underwent a complete overhaul. She brought in stained glass salvaged from churches in England, imported velvet curtains, antiques, crystal chandeliers, and even a full suit of armor to decorate her home. 

 

It’s an insanely impressive home, one that Barton crafted especially for herself, relying on construction methods so precise she frequently had to teach the local craftsmen how to perform them.

Some of the craftsmen were even afraid of damaging the raw materials: Barton found the perfect Schumacher fabrics from France for $150 a yard, and had to search for months to find someone willing to mount them to the walls. “They were scared to mess it up because of the costliness of the fabric. The man that hung that wallpaper used to come in drunk every day because he was nervous of messing it up,” she says with a chuckle.

Drone Snowboarding is the Thrilling Future of Winter Sports

Andrew Liszewski of Gizmodo is a bit more skeptical of that than I am. But I think that all that is necessary right now is adding to the quadcopter drones (maybe 3 in tandem) and getting a smaller child, such as a toddler. Once engineers can build more powerful drones, then drone snowboarding won’t be simply a sport, but a form of everyday transportation.

Tony The Tiger Versus The Furries

It seems only natural that Furries would find the Frosted Flakes spokescat Tony The Tiger appealing, because he's the epitome of a heroic masculine anthropomorph, and his voice is pretty cool too.

But some Furries (or quite possibly fake Furries trolling) have been taking their love of Tony too far on social media, forcing Tony to bite their mascot-sized heads off and block them on Twitter.

The blocking of all Furries from @realtonytiger really got under their fake fur, so they took to Twitter to complain about the unfairness of it all with the hashtag #tonytigergate.

But it all worked out for both cartoon spokesanimals and Furries alike in the end, because Chester the Cheeto munching Cheetah came out and welcomed all fans, freaky Furries or otherwise.

Oh Chester, you have so much love to give...

Sake-Flavored Kit Kat Contains Actual Alcohol

Japan is crazy for Kit Kat chocolate bars and that nation is home to numerous flavors that Americans might find unusual, including soy sauce and green tea. Now residents of Japan can get Kit Kat bars flavored with rice wine. They consist of 0.08% alcohol, so you will need to eat a lot of them in order to get a real sake experience. I humbly volunteer for that task.

Scary Good Photographic Recreations Of Bosch Paintings

The surreal, and often nightmarish, scenes featured in Hieronymus Bosch's paintings, such as The Last Judgment or The Garden Of Earthly Delights, are still seen as some of the most terrifying visions of Hell on Earth ever illustrated.

Bosch's unique take on that demonic look has influenced artists for centuries, but few photographers have ever tackled the difficult task of bringing these characters to life quite like Lori Pond.

Lori lets the Bosch influence shine through in her photos without allowing the literal translations to dull the character's edge, because they're supposed to be mysterious and bizarre beings after all.

But what's truly surprising about Lori's images is the fact that they're only a tad digitally enhanced:

“I hired a prosthetics designer to create the iconic ‘Bosch snout’ and legs and tail in one image, and a propmaster to make the life-size boat in Bosch Redux 4.0. My taxidermy teacher gave me some crows’ feet, and I got my friends not only to model for me, but also to help with the prop building, wardrobe, and makeup that went into every image. Most resulting photographs are made in camera, apart from some exceptions when I didn’t want to string up a woman in a harp or couldn’t find ears or birds bigger than a human.”

The Blizzard of 2016 came in with a mighty quiet roar and blanketed the (mostly Eastern) United States under inches, if not feet, of snow, literally causing New York to come to a standstill for a few days.

Marie-Helene Bertino wrote an essay in the persona of an alien, sent from a planet with an untranslatable name, to study humans and send back reports via fax. Musings on human beings and their strange ways from an alien point of view is nothing new, but this is funny.    

Five days ago, the bathroom key went missing. Landry Business Solutions has a PA and I made an announcement over it. Why we have a PA is beyond me since only twelve people work here and they sit in one room. I could have easily walked into that room and made a medium-volumed inquiry but I don’t like to leave my desk. My announcement over the PA was: WILL WHOEVER HAS THE BATHROOM KEY PLEASE RETURN IT! Three hours later Delilah slammed the key on my desk. The door had gotten stuck, and she had been trapped in the bathroom for hours. No one heard her yelling. She missed a meeting, and still no one thought to look for her. She heard my announcement in the bathroom where she sat, hating me. Someone from another office finally heard her and climbed through a heating duct to free her. Delilah, disoriented, left early. It’s a bad day when you realize how unimportant you are.

Of course, the above observation could have been written by any earthling. How about this:

I am bad at asking for help. When you ask a human being for help, there is a chance they will say later: remember when you asked for help, can I have five dollars? That goes for medicine, too. I don’t like asking help from pills in a bottle. I don’t want to be woken up at night by a tab of aspirin asking to borrow five dollars.

This Handy Gadget Will Help You Invade England

Your task is to invade England from across the English Channel. This has been done twice successfully, many times unsuccessfully, and countless times in the dreams of military planners. The challenge is to move an army across the water and then maintain a supply chain long enough for the invading army to become locally sufficient.

By 1798, the project had become all but impossible due to the supremacy of the Royal Navy. But that did not stop French generals and admirals from dreaming up ways of bypassing the Royal Navy, including digging a tunnel beneath the Channel and moving troops with balloons.

This image in the National Maritime Museum in London shows one proposed method that existed only in the terrified imaginations of Britons. It’s a huge fort on a raft that would carry 60,000 soldiers:

Unlike other prints produced during this wave of paranoia in London, which represent the vessel as an excessively fantastic contraption more appropriate to the tales of Baron Münchhausen, this print pares it down to a severe geometric symmetry to assert its claim to being based in fact. Indeed, a greater air of authority is lent by the claim that the engraving is made after an original drawing by a French prisoner of war, and by the wealth of statistical detail in the caption. The machine is described as: 'Flat; 2,100 Feet long, and 1,500 Feet broad; has 500 Cannon round it, 36 and 48 Pounders; at each end is two Wind Mills, which turns Wheels in the Water at every point of the Wind to Navigate; in the middle is a Fort enclosing Mortars, Perriers, &c. It carries 60,000 Men, Cavalry, Infantry, and Artillery.' Nonetheless, this does not disguise the unseaworthiness of the 'new machine', and neither is there any firm evidence that such a vessel was being constructed on the north French coast at this time.

The staff of Jimmy Kimmel Live went out on the streets to ask children which country is the best country in the world. Their answers show that U.S. schools have dropped patriotic indoctrination lessons, and they’ve apparently also dropped basic geography.

Archer Quotes Work Really Well With James Bond Stills

Sterling Archer can't even dream of being as good as James Bond at the secret agenting game, but that doesn't stop him from trying to channel that 007 vibe every day of his life.

And while Bond has definitely made some bold and memorable statements in his films, Archer has a way with words that tends to make people say "Wow, did he really just say that?".

But pretend like Archer's words are being said by James Bond and you've shaken up those fictional espionage films we all know and love in comedic style.

Basically it turns Bond into a doubly drunk, somehow slightly less lecherous, more conceited and a whole lot more idiotic version of 007...with a butler, and a lemur named Reggie.

10 Technologies in Movies We Wish Were Real

It’s pretty common to watch a movie, see a fictional gadget, and say “I want one of those!” Sadly, coming up with something wonderful in fiction is much easier than making it work in real life. Luckily, we have geniuses working on making those movie inspirations reality. What have you seen in movie that you wish were available in real life? While most of those futuristic gizmos are cool and fun, I think the Medbay would be the most useful.

When I saw Elysium last year, this stood out to me as one of the best, most useful, and most desired technologies in movies. The medbays in Elysium essentially heal anything and everything. The common cold? No need to take any Advil. You’ve got a broken arm? Boom. It’s fixed. A life-threatening disease? Yeah, don’t worry – you’re good. Even if they were only offered up to the incredibly affluent and wealthy, like they were in Elysium, just to have the medbays exist in real life would be an astonishing achievement on all its own.

Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” on Traditional Japanese Instruments

And it totally works! The musical duo called Team Kozan performs Taylor Swift’s hit song “Shake It Off” on the koto, which is a long plucked instrument with 13 strings, and the shakuhachi, which is a notch flute made of bamboo. At the end of the video, they put down their instruments and start shaking it off.
