Dear Indiana, Oil trains represent an escalating threat to communities around the country. More and more trains carrying explosive crude oil are crossing through major population centers - putting 25 million Americans at risk. In just the last three years, since the catastrophe that killed 47 in Lac Megantic, Quebec, there have already been 14 major oil trains fires, including a narrowly-averted disaster last month in Mosier, Oregon. Our leaders simple can't allow this dangerous practice to continue. That's why communities across the county are speaking out, in an #StopOilTrains Week of Action July 6-13. There's an event near you. Can you be there to call for an end to dangerous oil trains in our communities? Click here to find your event and RSVP. While the risk of oil trains is enormous, their role in our energy supply is miniscule. Only 2.5% of all oil consumed in the U.S. each day is moved via oil trains. New safety standards introduced last year have proven to be wholly insufficient. The fact is, there is just no safe way to transport crude oil by rail. And until we stop, critical waterways, countless pieces of infrastructure, and the homes of 25 million Americans are all at risk. From the public safety risk to the pollution of our climate, oil trains represent the wrong direction for our country. It's time for national and local leaders to take decisive action to protect Americans from this unnecessary threat. Click here to RSVP for your local #StopOilTrains action. Thanks for speaking out in your community to send the message. Elijah Zarlin, Director of Climate Campaigns CREDO Action from Working Assets Click below to RSVP: |
