Alexa Bass

(YouTube link)

The future of artificial intelligence! Brian Kane installed an Alexa Voice Service in his Billy Bass. They weren't kidding when they said you could add it to any device! The common response to this is, "Shut up and take my money!" But you can do this yourself, if you have a bit of skills. "Alexa, sing Take Me To The River!" -via reddit

Classic Villains Run for President

Posted: 05 Nov 2016 02:00 AM PDT

Why choose between the lesser of two evils for president when you can select between three evils? Pop culture has given us plenty of evil megalomaniacs, and looky here, they are running for president. Shredder (from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) Cobra Commander (from G.I. Joe), and the Joker (from Batman) all lay their platforms out to win your vote. See their speeches and hear their pitches at Geeks Are Sexy.

The Dash Cam Survived

Posted: 05 Nov 2016 12:00 AM PDT

Since there's a lot of snow and the date stamp on this dashcam video is October 30, we can assume this happened in Russia. Also the video description is in Russian. This guy stopped on a single-lane country road to talk to another driver, or relieve himself, or something. Then this happens.

Manual transmissions can slip out of gear! Even automatics can slip out of gear when they get really old and decrepit. Always set your parking brake. We don't know how bad the vehicle was damaged, but the dash cam video was fine. -via Digg

Some Of The Strangest Creatures From Japanese Mythology

Posted: 04 Nov 2016 10:00 PM PDT

Japanese folklore is the root of their pop culture creativity, and most of the mythological creatures known collectively as Yokai are so perfectly bizarre they could only come from Japan.

According to the old stories one of these creatures could show up at any of our houses if we don't follow certain rules.

And if a Yokai creature does show up at your house you'd better do what it says or suffer the consequences, which may leave you looking for a new place to live.

Pot Brownies

Posted: 04 Nov 2016 08:00 PM PDT

The law firm of Hutson & Harris in Waco, Texas, makes YouTube videos to give people general legal advice. They've found that people respond more if that advice is in the form of a song. This one is about marijuana brownies.

(YouTube link)

See, putting pot in your brownie mix sparks a new violation under Texas law: the entire recipe is considered a controlled substance, so the weight of your brownie mix adds to the crime. A tiny amount of marijuana added to a pound of brownie mix will get you a felony charge. Take their advice, and don't do it in Texas. What you really want to do is check out their other videos, especially the one about medical malpractice lawsuits. Chris Harris stepped into the discussion at reddit to tell us some more about the brownie video.

Photographer Tests Her Skills With A One Dollar Camera

Posted: 04 Nov 2016 06:00 PM PDT

Amateur photographers often assume more expensive cameras will take better pictures, but photography is all about vision and composition so it doesn't have to be an expensive hobby.

In fact, there are plenty of pros out there who get by just fine with moderately priced equipment, because when it comes to cameras a higher price rarely equals noticeably better photos.

To prove this point photographer Skyler Adams picked up an old Canon Sure Shot and an expired roll of film in a Japanese thrift store for a buck each, shooting exclusively with that cheapo camera for a month.

Skyler's shots prove a cheap camera and an expired roll of film can take photographs that are virtually impossible to tell apart from digital pics, and the entire exercise only cost her ten bucks!

The Story of an Alaskan Journalist

Posted: 04 Nov 2016 04:00 PM PDT

You can own an award-winning newspaper and still not be able to afford a house with a flush toilet. But Tom Morphet is proud of what he's built. After working at the Chilkat Valley News in Haines, Alaska, for 25 years, he bought the newspaper five years ago.

At 55, he needs a new career. His wife, Jane Pascoe, has her eye on a house in town that, unlike his cabin in the woods 8 miles out, has power and water.

"I said, 'Honey, we could live for free in the cabin.' But she wants to flush a toilet," Morphet said. "When I met her she was a girl living out of a backpack and she didn't care."

Morphet accepted poverty for decades to do no-nonsense journalism in a tiny town that could barely support it and didn't always appreciate it. The News has won 20 Alaska Press Club awards in the last three years but sells only 1,500 copies at the height of the visitor season.

Morphet tried to sell the paper -at a great loss- to his only reporter, but the deal fell through. Meanwhile, he is running for a seat in the Haines Borough Assembly. But the real story is Morphet's biography, from the advice he got in college to his accidental job at a fish-processing plant to his adventures in local journalism. Injured Motorcyclist Records Heartfelt Goodbye Videos To Family After Crash

Posted: 04 Nov 2016 02:00 PM PDT

You know how they say your life flashes before your eyes when you're in mortal danger?

Well, if you're one of the lucky ones who survives the life flashing phase you may start to wonder how much time you have left on Earth- and what remains unsaid between you and your loved ones.

On October 15th motorcyclist Kevin Diepenbrock and his co-worker Phillip Polito slipped and crashed on the famously deadly Dragon's Tail in Deals Gap, North Carolina.

Polito died in the crash, and Kevin suffered serious injuries that included "two punctured lungs, 17 breaks in 12 ribs and multiple spine fractures", injuries that made him think his days might be numbered.

So Kevin pulled out his smartphone and started recording a raw and heartfelt video of what he thought were his final goodbyes.

Kevin survived and was rescued 30 hours later, and now he's a lucky man on the mend with a tragic tale to tell and the video footage to prove it.

What the Cubs' Win Means

Posted: 04 Nov 2016 12:00 PM PDT

Chris Hallbeck of Maximumble illustrated what many life long Cubs fans thought of after the 2016 World Series came to a close on Wednesday. It's a family thing.

Wayne Williams' father (also named Wayne Williams) was a lifelong Cubs fan, as well as a World War II Navy veteran. He died in 1980, never having seen his team win the World Series.

"I talked it out with my boys forever. I let them know that I told my dad - we had a pact. When the Cubs - not if, when - the Cubs got into the World Series, we would make sure we listen to the games together," Williams said.

Look, dad, here's your son, keeping his part of the bargain.

Williams drove from North Carolina to the Greenwood Forest Lawn Cemetery in Greenwood, Indiana, to watch the game with his father, who is buried in the military section. -via reddit

Guillermo Del Toro Presents : The Captured Bird

Posted: 04 Nov 2016 10:00 AM PDT

Guillermo del Toro has presented us with amazing tales that run the gamut from dark horror to fairy tale fantasy, but gothic horror is one of del Toro's personal favorite genres.

Which is probably one of the reasons why he backed and produced Jovanka Vuckovic's spooky short film The Captured Bird, that and the story seems like something Guillermo would have written.

Released in 2012, The Captured Bird was Jovanka's first time writing and directing a film, and since this debut she has gone on to become "one of the most influential women in horror."

14 Notorious Female Gangsters in History

Posted: 04 Nov 2016 09:00 AM PDT

History is full of tough women that never made it into history books. Some were not only tough, but criminal. In this list of 14 notorious female gangsters, you'll find some you know of, some that were part of famous mobs due to relationships with men, and some that you've never encountered before. Consider Stephanie St. Clair, who build a financial empire in Harlem in the 1920s.

She was called "Queenie" in much of Manhattan, but in her Harlem home she was known only as Madame St. Clair. An immigrant of French and African descent, St. Clair set up her numbers bank ten years after moving to the U.S. and became fiercely protective of her neighborhood. She testified against corrupt cops, getting them fired from the force. Even more impressive, she thwarted the invasion of downtown mobsters once the end of Prohibition sent them uptown in search of new revenue.

With the help of her chief enforcer Ellsworth "Bumpy" Johnson and an alliance with Lucky Luciano, Madame St. Clair kept the likes of Dutch Schultz out of Harlem. She later gloated when Schultz lay dying from a gunshot wound, sending a note to his hospital bed that read, "As ye sow, so shall ye reap." When she retired, St. Clair handed her operation over to Bumpy, who became known as The Harlem Godfather.

This Turtle Thinks Sex is Just Plain "Wow"

Posted: 04 Nov 2016 08:00 AM PDT

Finding a ready and willing sexual partner isn't easy, but when you do, it's sometimes surprisingly wonderful, leaving you with nothing to say but "wow." And this tortoise knows how that feels -and he can't stop expressing his excitement with just that word. At least there's no question as to whether or not he's having a good time.

You Are So Beautiful

Posted: 04 Nov 2016 07:00 AM PDT

Otavalo, Ecuador

Turkish photographer Mehmet Genç goes by the online name Rotasiz Seyyah, which translates to "non-route traveler." His latest project involves taking a picture of a women, then telling her that she is beautiful, then taking another picture of her reaction. The series is called You Are So Beautiful.

Sierra Nevada, Colombia

The two images together are repeated in places all over Central and South America, but the reactions are strikingly similar: a broad smile, sometimes tinged with a bit of disbelief or sudden shyness. The faces are quite joyous. They make you hope that Genç continues to spread such happiness.

Amazon, Brazil

There's a lot of commentary on the full set of pictures at Genç's project page at his site, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to translate it into English. You can see more of Genç's images at his Facebook page and Instagram. -via Metafilter

Posted: 04 Nov 2016 06:00 AM PDT

Halloween may be over, but there are certain Halloween costumes that are so epic you want to look at them even if it's Christmas day. This amazing Sauron costume is absolutely one of these types of costume. Best of all, Instructable user jdgrosky actually wrote detailed instructions on how to make your own version of the costume -of course, part of what makes this one so lovable is the fact that this Sauron is actually a little kid so you're probably never going to beat this one.
