President Trump topped the first dozen tumultuous days of his presidency with a dramatic presentation Tuesday in the White House East Room, introducing the nation to his first nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court, Judge Neil Gorsuch of the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals in Colorado. The announcement, after a day and a half of suspense, changed the subject after five days of focus on and confusion surrounding the president’s executive order barring refugees and others from seven Muslim-majority countries. Gorsuch, 49, has sterling legal credentials and was appointed to his current job by voice vote by the Senate in 2006. But Democrats are still smarting from President Obama’s pick for the court, Merrick Garland, never even getting so much as a hearing. They are vowing a fight, but how far are they willing to go? — Ron Elving |
