An increase in social shopping and livestreaming on social channels are among retail and e-commerce trends predicted by analysts for 2021. Doritos will bring back back a cone-shaped version of its chips, 3D Crunch, and is promoting the item with the help of actress Ali Landry, who introduced the 3D chip in a 1998 "Laundromat" Super Bowl spot. Landry will launch a #Doritos3DChallenge TikTok challenge on Dec. 28 that encourages users to post videos of themselves boldly catching the chips in their mouths.
White Castle's new video, " 'Twas the Night Before Cravemas," features a branded version of the classic tale in storybook form, with an emotional reading by actor Richard Dreyfuss. The brand is donating $1, up to $25,000, for every video view via YouTube, Instagram and Facebook to the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation's Change is on the Menu initiative, which is supporting the restaurant industry during the pandemic.
Telegram, the instant messaging app, will launch an ad platform in 2021 "that is user-friendly, respects privacy and allows us to cover the costs of server and traffic," wrote founder Pavel Durov on his Telegram channel. Durov explained that the app, which is approaching 500 million users, intends to introduce ads on its public one-to-many channels, which he says resemble Twitter feeds and "can have millions of subscribers each."
IAC will spin off Vimeo with plans to take the video site public in the second quarter of 2021. Vimeo, created in 2004 and used primarily by creators with an assortment of customization options, raised $150 million in November for improvements to the platform, including better integration with live events.
A Delta Air Lines crew is employing social media to try to reunite a stuffed animal with its owner, who dropped it on the jetway after a flight from Kansas City, Mo., to Atlanta. "We want to find his family as I'm sure he's missed!" a crew member wrote on Facebook.
