Celebrating 245 Years of America
We're Wishing You a Wonderful Fourth of July!
On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence, setting the 13 colonies on the road to freedom as a sovereign nation. As we celebrate this Independence Day, we reflect on how our Founding Fathers enshrined in our Constitution the importance of statistics as a vital tool for measuring America.
From sea to shining sea, there will be some manner of celebration, and of course, fireworks.
Among the celebrations is the Boston Pops fireworks spectacular, featuring Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture." In the United States of 1812, the population of 7.2 million had a median age of around 16 years old.
Now, today's far more diverse population is over 331 million. The median age calculated in 2017 is the highest in history at 38.5 years.
The number of signers of the Declaration of Independence.
These facts and statistics about America were made possible thanks to responses to U.S. Census Bureau surveys. We appreciate the public's cooperation as we continuously measure our people, places, and economy.
