Facebook has rebranded its corporate name as Meta, unveiling a new logo and brand identity at its Connect conference, during which CEO Mark Zuckerberg explained, "We believe the metaverse will be the successor to the mobile internet." Meta's social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp will make up its "family of apps," and other announcements included updates on the metaverse Horizon platform, a virtual reality Quest for Business platform and an AR creation app named Polar.

Brands are beginning to realize the potential of crossover marketing between real and virtual worlds, such as Chipotle's "Boorito" Halloween campaign that rewards select individuals who visit a virtual Chipotle counter with codes to redeem at local restaurants, writes Christina Wootton, Roblox vice president of global brand partnerships. Wootton points to other crossover opportunities such as offering product preorders online to inform production decisions, and says success will require a bit of risk-taking among brands.

McDonald's USA is celebrating the return of its limited-edition McRib from Nov. 1 with a Twitter sweepstakes that will give a McRib nonfungible token to 10 winners. The company's first entry into the NFT market marks the McRib's 40th anniversary.
In 2020, B2B marketers were forced to abandon their traditional in-person event playbook and turn to virtual events. At the onset of 2021, many marketers were optimistic about the prospects of once again attending in-person events, and yet, many marketers still planned to stick with virtual conferences and shows. Twitter is letting Blue subscribers test upcoming features, such as potential 10-minute video lengths in posts from desktops and pinned inbox conversations for iOS users, under its Labs program. "Labs also provides an opportunity for other internal product teams to submit features, get early quantitative and qualitative data, and then later release to a wider audience," a Twitter statement adds.
Instagram has introduced a free online Holiday Success Guide featuring tips for developing and updating product catalogs and product tagging advice, which the platform is also providing via Reels tutorials. The guide notes that product tags posted at least five days each month result in increased sales and page visits.
An eMarketer survey of social media users focusing on nine of the top platforms found that data security, content legitimacy and a safe environment were the primary issues that affected users' decisions to engage with ads or sponsored content. Ad annoyance and relevancy were less of a factor, eMarketer reported, and brands should "consider voting with their dollars, choosing to support platforms that provide safe content environments over those that harm users," write Audrey Schomer and Debra Aho Williamson.
A one-year-old golden retriever has posed for his owner's social media posts wearing a different Halloween costume each day in October, including one of his namesake, the affable Friends character Chandler Bing. "His favorite costume was a wide retriever because he got to play with a football," said owner Katie Palamara. "His least favorite was the Mario Kart one because he was a little afraid of the balloons."
