Historians shed new light on the Atlantic slave trade by using data

Banks rely on AI to fight money laundering and detect risk, but they need to watch for racial bias. You have to understand why and how things happened.” — Dr. Ugo Nwokeji, Associate Professor of African American and African Diaspora Studies, the University of California, Berkeley Researching slave voyages The Rice University-led SlaveVoyages consortium helps researchers, who are bringing new understanding of the painful history of the Atlantic slave trade, using records now widely accessible online. But numbers aren’t enough—researchers strive to strike a balance between statistics and stories about people. Avoiding AI bias Artificial intelligence (AI) is a powerful tool that banks use to fight money laundering and detect risk. Three principles can help banks guard against inadvertent racial bias. Making educated decisions Transitioning to cloud financial applications helped San Francisco State University eliminate manual tasks, increase efficiency, reduce risk, and have the correct information to make decisions for more than 28,000 students and 3,500 faculty and staff.
