Morning Rundown
Supreme Court apparently to overturn Roe v. Wade abortion case, draft opinion shows: Report: An apparent draft Supreme Court opinion obtained by Politico shows the panel's conservative majority of justices is ready to overturn nearly 50 years of established abortion rights precedent since Roe v. Wade. The document, which Politico said it obtained from a "person familiar with the court's proceedings," is marked with "first draft" and dated Feb. 10, 2022 -- two months after oral arguments were heard in the case Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization. "Roe was egregiously wrong from the start," writes Justice Samuel Alito, the opinion's apparent author, in a copy of the draft posted online. The leak is an extraordinary breach of Supreme Court protocol and tradition. Never before has such a consequential draft opinion been leaked to the public before publication. ABC News reached out to a Supreme Court spokeswoman, but she declined to comment. If Alito's opinion were to hold, as written, it would dramatically upend abortion rights across America, effectively allowing each state to set its own policy.
Warrant issued for female corrections officer who went missing with inmate accused of murder: A manhunt is intensifying in Florence, Alabama, for an escaped murder suspect and a corrections officer who have been missing for days. A warrant has been issued for Lauderdale County Assistant Director of Corrections Vicki White on charges of committing or facilitating an escape, Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton said at a news conference Monday. Vicki White "participated" in the escape with inmate Casey White, the sheriff said, adding, "Whether she did that willingly or she was coerced, threatened … not really sure." The sheriff said law enforcement has no idea where they are, but promised, "They will be brought back to justice." Casey and Vicki White are not related. The U.S. Marshals Service is offering up to a $10,000 reward for information leading to Casey White's capture and a $5,000 reward for information leading to Vicky White.
New Mexico expands program that could make child care free for many families: New Mexico is expanding a program that waives the cost of child care, an initiative that could make child care free for many families in the southwestern state. The announcement from Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham last Thursday said the state's Early Childhood Education and Care Department estimates that over 30,000 more families will be able to take advantage of New Mexico's Childcare Assistance Program starting this May, doubling the number of families who were already participating. Families earning up to 400% of the federal poverty level, or $111,000 for a family of four, qualify to have their child care copayments waived. The New Mexico Early Childhood Education and Care Department announcement notes that the expansion will run until June 30, 2023.
Mom of 8 welcomes 3rd back-to-back pair of twins: It's a party of 12 for the Alarcons of Wallkill, New York. Kimberly Alarcon, 37, and John Alarcon, 43, welcomed fraternal twin girls Kenzy and Kenzley at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, New York, last week. Kenzy and Kenzley are the Alarcons' third pair of twins, and will get to meet their eight older siblings soon. The Alarcons are already parents to Brittney, 17, Sarah, 13, Hunter, 10, twins Zachary and Zoey, 6, and twins Oliver and Olivia, 4. They're also fostering their nephew King, who is 3. While it's uncommon to have multiple sets of twins back to back, it's common in Kimberly's family. They told "GMA" that an aunt had two sets of twins and a set of triplets.
