Welcome to The Independent's US Morning Headlines newsletter
President Joe Biden used a dramatic primetime address to the nation on Thursday to warn of the danger to American democracy posed by acolytes of former president Donald Trump and others. Standing in Philadelphia — the place where America's founding documents were debated and drafted — Mr Biden warned that those founding ideas of "equality ande democracy" were now under attack. "Too much of what's happening in our country today is not normal," he said, adding that Mr Trump and his "Maga Republican" allies represented an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our Republic". Mr Trump has continued to rage against an FBI and Justice Department investigation against him in recent days, and in a new interview flirted with the prospect of "full pardons" for January 6 rioters if he is reelected in 2024. |

What is behind the water crisis in Jackson? |
More than 180,000 people in the city of Jackson, Mississippi, and its nearby suburbs are in the throes of a major crisis, with access to reliable and clean running water cut off "indefinitely". The problems unfolded this week after record-breaking rain storms hit the region and dumped up to 13 inches of rain in the state over five days. Ordinarily, Jackson sees a total of just four or five inches of rain during the entire month of August. As a result, floodwaters surged down the city's Pearl River and compromised the main water treatment plant. People have since had to rely on bottled water as schools closed and officials said there was not enough left in reserve to flush toilets and supply showers. So what lies behind the disaster and how has it been allowed to come to this? |
