| May 1, 2023 | Manufacturing of Food, Beverage, and Tobacco The Food and Drink sector provides safe, quality, healthy and affordable food to millions of people worldwide. Despite structural changes in the past decades the sector remains a large source of manufacturing output and employment. Employment in tobacco manufacturing and cultivation continued to fall in the past decade. Nonetheless, the sector remains an economic activity in which millions of women and men earn their living. Food Manufacturing Workers in the food manufacturing industry link farmers and other agricultural producers with consumers. They do this by processing raw fruits, vegetables, grains, meats, and dairy products into finished goods ready for the grocer or wholesaler to sell to households, restaurants, or institutional food services. Beverage Manufacturing The Beverage Manufacturing industry includes three types of establishments: - those that manufacture nonalcoholic beverages;
- those that manufacture alcoholic beverages through the fermentation process
- those that produce distilled alcoholic beverages.
Ice manufacturing, while not a beverage, is included with nonalcoholic beverage manufacturing because it uses the same production process as water purification. Tobacco Manufacturing The Tobacco Manufacturing industry includes two types of establishments - those engaged in re-drying and stemming tobacco
- those that manufacture tobacco products, such as cigarettes and cigars
