The secret to jazz improvisation revealed ->

The two essential ingredients... ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

Hey Indiana,

Back when I was in music college there was a running joke between me and my friends.

We'd come out of a long practice session and proclaim that we had finally discovered "the secret" to jazz.

I suppose the essence of it was that jazz improvisation is a bit of a puzzle, and trying to get to the next level can feel tough.

But if there was only a "secret" or a "hack" wouldn't that be awesome?

Well, back then, that was a joke.

But today, I actually do believe there is a "secret" to jazz improvisation, and I'm about to reveal that to you.

Now, the "secret" isn't just a thing that you can practice, and magically you will transcend to the levels of John Coltrane.

No, it's much better than that.

Because the secret has everything to do with the two areas you need work on to succeed. It's guaranteed to help you improve.

1. Hearing great ideas in your head.

If you can hear great musical ideas in your head, that means you are 50% of the way to being a great jazz improviser.

This is one of the things we focus on in my Inner Circle membership.

Put another way, if you want to sound like Charlie Parker, but right now you couldn't sing a solo in your head or hear ideas over a jazz standard in the style of Charlie Parker, you probably have some work to do.

But simply being able to hear great ideas in your head IS NOT enough...not even close.

2. Muscle memory

If you can hear great ideas in your head, but you don't have muscle memory to play them on your instrument, the other 50% of the puzzle will be missing.

You absolutely need to develop muscle memory on your instrument.

That means automatic physical responses on your instrument to sounds that you are hearing in your head.

These two have to play together.

That's why in our Inner Circle we are often working on both hearing great language and developing muscle memory at the same time.

Muscle memory will sometimes dictate the ideas in your head, and sometimes what you hear in your head dictates your muscle memory.

Both however, are AUTOMATIC responses.

When you develop both of these to a high level there is very little thinking involved, and you simply improvise and play.

Wouldn't it be great to get to that level?

Well, in this week's podcast episode I give you concrete strategies for building up both of these.

Definitely give it a listen!
