Deporting foreign criminals: 20 years of failure |
|
| Under cover of the appeal court ruling on the government's Rwanda scheme, the Home Office has published a damning report about something else that it is bad at: deporting foreign criminals – even ones who want to go. There is a Twitter thread by Colin Yeo summarising the inspector's report itself, which is here. The inability of the bureaucracy to get a grip of this task is long-standing. Charles Clarke resigned as home secretary in 2006 because he promised that every offender who left prison would be considered for deportation – not deported, just "considered" for it – and the Home Office couldn't even deliver that. |

A look back at the week in Westminster |
It felt like another week in which the tide continued to turn against the prime minister. A couple of opinion polls on Monday confirmed Labour's widening lead, conclusively crushing the "steady recovery" story for which Rishi Sunak had hoped. On Tuesday the nurses' strike ballot failed to reach the legal threshold, but hospital consultants joined junior doctors in planning to strike – unless Steve Barclay stuffs their mouths with gold promptly, NHS waiting lists will continue to lengthen. And today the government's Rwanda policy was defeated in the appeal court – a decision that may be reversed in the Supreme Court in October, but meanwhile the damage is done.
