GROWING GOOD DADS

My Baby Contracted RSV: A Parent's Nightmare

(With a Happy Ending!)

This week on Growing Good Dads, we’re recapping our recent conversation with podcast guest Tim Lewis in blog form. Tim is a new dad to four-month-old Ophelia, a happy baby who gave Tim and his wife, Chelsea, a big scare late last year when she contracted Respiratory Syncytial Virus. Fortunately, Ophelia is strong and made a quick recovery from her illness.

We did what was essentially a FaceTime call with a nurse from our home so the nurse could watch Ophelia’s chest rise and fall. And about that time, she developed a wheeze, too.

She was working really hard to breathe. By that evening, we took her to the ER, where they got her hooked up on oxygen and gave her fluids.

Transitions Abound with Blended Families | With Dana and Christina Ford

From the Good Dads Archives

Join us for a conversation originally recorded in 2021 with the Fords as the blended family navigates the important transitions inherent in step-father and step-son relationships.

Dana and Christina give advice for differentiating approaches to parenting versus step-parenting. We also talk about the first-baby nerves, anticipating your partner's needs and raising un-selfish children.

"We do not parent all of our children the same, just like I don't coach all my players the same. One of the most important things is you have to learn your people. That means you have to learn your children individually, same way I do with my players. You have to spend time with them, communicate with them and observe them. "

I tried to sue the airline for misplacing my luggage.

But I lost my case.

Hanging my dart board on the ceiling really makes me want to throw up!

TRIVIA

In last week's newsletter, we quizzed you on your RSV knowledge in newborns and infants and asked you to find the TRUE statement among the following:

  • A: Youngsters are most at risk for contracting the virus between 2–3 years old. (False; infants 6 months and younger are most at risk.)
  • B: In 2025, the CDC will release an RSV vaccine to be administered during pregnancy. (False; a vaccine of this nature already exists!)
  • C: RSV can cause more severe infections, like bronchitis and pneumonia. (C is TRUE!)
  • D: It's possible to contract RSV at any time, but outbreaks are most common in the summer. (False; outbreaks are most common in fall, winter and through the end of spring.)

POLL

Given our March podcasts and blogs will cover being a good dad to babies between 6 months and 1 year old, we want to know your opinion:

As a dad, how does parenting newborns under 6 months compare to ages 6 months - 1 year?
It gets easier after about 6 months
It's about the same
Parenting is harder as baby grows

We'll reveal your responses in next week's newsletter!
