| 🗳️ The U.S. Supreme Court will weigh in on whether Donald Trump can claim sweeping presidential immunity in the face of a federal prosecutor's criminal case against him for his alleged election subversion in 2020 and on Jan. 6. The justices said in an order issued Wednesday that they will take up the question in oral arguments during the week of April 22 -- which further delays Trump's prosecution. The news comes as a judge in Cook County, Illinois, on Wednesday ruled that Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, also known as the "insurrection clause," bars former President Donald Trump from the 2024 Republican primary ballot. 🚨 Multiple fires are impacting the Texas Panhandle, including what has quickly grown to become the second-largest wildfire in Texas history. Gov. Greg Abbott declared a disaster declaration for 60 counties on Tuesday due to "widespread wildfire activity throughout the state." The largest of the blazes -- the Smokehouse Creek Fire -- has burned an estimated 850,000 acres since initially reported on Monday and was 3% contained as of Wednesday afternoon, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service. Learn about several factors that came together to produce the extreme wildfire event here. ⚖️ Sen. Tammy Duckworth was blocked by Republicans on Wednesday from unanimously passing legislation to establish a right to access assistive reproductive care like in vitro fertilization -- a push spurred by a recent Alabama Supreme Court ruling that embryos are children, which has upended IVF in the state. Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, a Mississippi Republican, opposed Duckworth's proposal, arguing that it violates religious freedoms and overshot protecting IVF to more sweeping and "extreme" genetic matters. 🏛️ Kentucky's Mitch McConnell is stepping down as Senate Republican leader in November after nearly two decades in the role. McConnell, who turned 82 last week and is the longest-serving Senate leader in history, announced the decision in a speech on the Senate floor Wednesday, adding that he'll finish his term as senator, which will end in January 2027. 📺 Richard Lewis, the comedian and actor known for his roles on the HBO comedy "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and in the film "Robin Hood: Men in Tights," has died at 76. Lewis "passed away peacefully" at his home in Los Angeles Tuesday night after suffering a heart attack, his publicist Jeff Abraham said in a statement to ABC News. 🎂 Mary Lea Forsythe of Sand Springs, Oklahoma, who was born on Feb 29, 1924, was recognized by the Centenarians of Oklahoma and awarded a proclamation from the city celebrating her 100th birthday, despite only having celebrated 25 actual birthdays. | |
