Over the course of two weeks, we exposed and challenged the influence of Big Polluters in this space, and built support for justice-based policies to address the climate crisis. Most importantly, we made sure that the abusive power from transnational corporations doesn't go unchallenged and demanded power be restored back in the hands of people, where it belongs. It should be obvious: those that profit from climate destruction cannot write the rules of climate action. Yet, at this critical time, fossil fuel production and global carbon emissions are at record highs. And the fact that governments everywhere are failing to deliver the action that we urgently need is by decades of design. For years, corporate elites have steadily chipped away at our democracy. They have found ways to influence and undermine these democratic processes in order to rob us of our rights and protections. And they're continuing to do so while reaping enormous profits -- all at the expense of our health, our livelihoods, and the planet. But we're rising against all this unchecked corporate abuse to reclaim our power. And through Corporate Accountability's campaigns, we are exposing the multiple and hidden ways that corporations -- and the mega-wealthy few behind them -- are continuing their deceptive and abusive practices. Together, we are playing a critical role in stopping dangerous distractions by corporations and opening up pathways toward real solutions to protect people and the planet. Here's how: Exposing Big Polluters' junky climate schemes Instead of transitioning off fossil fuels, Big Polluters are increasingly relying on carbon markets to continue business as usual -- keeping us on the path of untenable destruction. That's why, for the last few months, we have been working to expose and discredit these schemes as not only ineffective, but also dangerous. And through our recent research covered in outlets like The Guardian, we're exposing the fundamental flaws in carbon offsets as a so-called "solution" to the climate crisis. So which corporations are using junk offsets to inflate their claims of emissions cuts? Read more to find out. Detailing Big Polluters' web of influence Corporations like Shell, BP, Nestlé, and more have a variety of strategies that they use to undermine climate action globally. But new research from the global campaign to Kick Big Polluters Out details some of the deep and extensive ties that the world's largest polluters have to trade associations and front groups that are attending the climate talks and advancing the profit-driven interests of Big Polluters -- all with impunity. Challenging Big Tobacco's attempts to market to youth The powerful organizing of our tobacco campaign is adding momentum behind the Make Big Tobacco Pay movement -- this time, by challenging the industry's attempts to market to young people, particularly in Latin America. In Colombia, we found that Philip Morris International (PMI) is using youth culture, such as sponsoring music festivals, to heavily promote its deadly products, despite the country's ban on tobacco advertising.
