Hello and welcome to The Independent's weekly roundup of top climate stories.
Hurricane Helene has left "biblical devastation" in North Carolina as recovery efforts get underway across the Southeast US. More than 133 people have died and hundreds remain unaccounted for amid the storm, which has also caused billions of dollars worth of damage. Meanwhile, millions have been left without electricity after power lines and cell towers were damaged. "This is the most significant natural disaster that any one of us has ever seen," said Ryan Cole, an emergency official for Buncombe County, North Carolina. Follow our live coverage of Hurricane Helene. | Clockwise from top-left: An aerial view of damaged houses after Hurricane Helene made landfall in Horseshoe Beach, Florida; Storm damaged cars sit along Mill Creek in Old Fort, North Carolina; Streets flooded near Peachtree Creek after hurricane Helene brought in heavy rains over night in Atlanta, Georgia (Getty images) | Over the past week, Hurricane Helene unleashed over 40 trillion gallons of rain, causing widespread devastation. Scientists attribute the storm's intensity to unusually warm ocean waters, which fuelled Helene into a near-perfect storm, leaving a trail of destruction and loss of life across the American South. Helene will go down as one of the most damaging and impactful storms in US history, said AccuWeather. Meanwhile, in the East, Typhoon Krathon has forced shutdowns and flight cancellations across Taiwan as it approaches the densely populated industrial hub on the island's western coast, threatening a "rare" direct hit. | |
