Dave Gonigam – Civil War by Another Name

The most eyebrow-raising scenario resulting from the presidential election is a possible “clear Trump win” — that is, Trump comes out on top in the Electoral College but Kamala Harris garners a five-point margin in the popular vote.

In this scenario, the Democrats could encourage competing slates of electors in states where Harris lost narrowly. They might even egg on the West Coast states to threaten secession unless Republicans agree to abolish the Electoral College and to split California into five states to boost its representation in the Senate.

The certification of the election by Congress might deadlock. And, if Jan. 20 rolls around without a president-elect appointed as commander in chief, it's unclear what the military will do.

Today we tease out what might happen if these events unfold… in reality… in 2024.

What does a Trump or Harris win mean for the country? The differences couldn’t be more stark.

Trump supports lower taxes, less regulation, and higher tariffs on imported goods. He also wants a secure border, deportation of illegal immigrants (starting with criminals and terrorists), and a strong military but little or no involvement in foreign conflicts.

A Harris presidency, on the other hand, would bring higher taxes on corporations, higher taxes on capital gains, price controls, open borders, defunding the police, ending private health insurance, and continued aid to Ukraine.
