Education:- Watch "Skyrocketing Your Jazz Skills" from Jazz Improv Booster Pack. This masterclass will teach you how to make decisions about what to practice to get best results and will serve as a good foundation for you going forward. Just watch and gain awareness.
- Watch 1 masterclass from Jazz Improv Jump Starter. Pick one from the list that you think is either most interesting or useful for you and just watch it. Then decide on one strategy from that masterclass that you want to start practicing next week.
Practice:- Pick 1 lick from "51 Killer Jazz Blues Licks In All 12 Keys" from Jazz Improv Booster Pack and learn it. Find one you like, then learn it in two keys each day, with plenty of review of each key as you go along.
- Pick 1 jazz solo to learn from 25 Killer Jazz Solos, and learn the first 8 bars. Preferably pick a solo on a jazz standard you already know. Learn it by ear using the recordings. Go slowly, and spend lots of time reviewing everything you learn. Don't rush this - allow yourself 1 month to learn the whole thing.
| | Week 2: | Education: - Watch another masterclass from Jazz Improv Jump Starter. Pick another from the list that you think is either most interesting or useful for you and just watch it. The goal here is to continue to explore some of the strategies that are available to you, and once again, make a plan for how to practice one of the strategies next week.
Practice:- Pick another lick from "51 Killer Jazz Blues Licks In All 12 Keys" from Jazz Improv Booster Pack and learn it. Find one you like, then learn it in two keys each day, with plenty of review of each key as you go along.
- Learn the next 8 bars of the solo from 25 Killer Jazz Solos. All you are doing is continuing the process of learning the solo by ear. Remember to go slow and take your time - you are not in a rush.
- Practice the strategy from last week's masterclass. Remember how you picked a strategy you wanted to practice? Now do it. Keep in mind, you won't master this strategy in one week. The idea is to actually try it and start seeing what resonates with you.
| | Week 3: | Education: - Listen to the audio recording of the solo you are learning. We're going to skip watching a masterclass this week, because at this point you already have a few great strategies you're working in - better to do less now and do more next month. Although I'd recommend starting to do this Week 1, budget about 15-30 minutes per day just listening to the solo on repeat. You want to continue to develop a deep familiarity with the language you are learning.
After this week you should be 75% done with the solo. Feel free to review the previous week's 16 bars.
- Practice the strategy from last week's masterclass. Put into action what you learned and give it a try. If you have extra practice time you can review the strategy from the previous week's masterclass practice. But for now, just focus on the new strategy.
| | Week 4: | Education: - Watch "How to Start Effortlessly Improvising Jazz Solos" from Jazz Improv Booster Pack. You're done learning your solo this week, so this masterclass will give you some great ideas for how to take that solo you learned and 2X the results next month.
Practice:- Pick another lick from "51 Killer Jazz Blues Licks In All 12 Keys" from Jazz Improv Booster Pack and learn it. Find one you like, then learn it in two keys each day, with plenty of review of each key as you go along.
- Learn the last 8 bars of the solo from 25 Killer Jazz Solos. This should conclude your solo. Spend time playing the entire thing along with the recording, and feel free to slow down the speed if you need to
- Review strategies from Jazz Improv Jump-Starter masterclasses. Work on both of them so you can gain a little bit more familiarity with the concepts. After this, you can decide if any of these resonate with you and you'd like to keep working on them, or if you'd like to prioritize something else.
