Now let's get to the news.   Donald Trump nominated Matt Gaetz as his attorney general. Who is he? A divisive Trump ally. The Republican resigned from Congress yesterday ahead of the expected release of a report into allegations that he engaged in sexual misconduct. The backlash: The pick, as well as that of Tulsi Gabbard for intelligence, stunned senators and even some Trump advisers. It marked a bizarre and extreme turn for the president-elect. Losing track? With the presidency, Senate and House in hand, Republicans can usher in the drastic changes they have promised. In the Senate: Republicans chose John Thune to replace Mitch McConnell as majority leader. They rejected outside pressure from some Trump allies to select Rick Scott. Read this story           Trump and President Joe Biden met face-to-face at the White House. What happened? Biden congratulated Trump on his election during the extraordinary meeting. Later in the day, Trump "joked" that he may run for president again in 2028. Also in D.C.: Trump was joined by Elon Musk, his "first buddy." Meanwhile, Trump's team is working on ways to boost Musk's radical DOGE plans — with or without Congress. Read this story         Israel is preparing a Lebanon cease-fire plan as a "gift" to Trump, officials said. Why? To deliver Trump an early foreign policy win. Trump has emboldened Israeli hard-liners, but also said he wants an end to the wars in the Middle East. What else to know: An Israeli airstrike damaged a clinic in a Gaza humanitarian zone, a charity said. And a CIA official was arrested this week over leaked secret files on Israel. But it's too early to know where the late-season storm, which would be named "Sara," will go once it forms. In the Pacific: A Category 4 typhoon and a tropical storm are on track to hit the Philippines. The region is still recovering from Typhoon Toraji. Read this story         Loneliness can increase your risk for dementia, a new study found. What to know: Feeling lonely increased the risk for dementia — because of any cause, including Alzheimer's — by 31%, according to data from over 600,000 people. Why? One theory is that reduced social contact leads to less opportunity to stimulate your brain. But being lonely is different from choosing solitude, which can lift your mood. Read this story         A scientist experimented on her own breast cancer — and it worked. A risky test: Croatian virologist Beata Halassy injected herself with viruses she had cultivated in a lab in 2020. Her tumor shrank and surgeons were able to remove it. It's controversial: Experts are divided on the ethics of self-experimentation, which has a long history. But, in a recent study, Halassy said she has been in remission for four years.
