Celebrate Our Seniors

Senior Independent Living Month

As we recognize the independence of older adults and their contributions to society, let's also take time to learn how to help seniors continue to live independently.

Even though with age we tend to become more dependent on those around us, we can continue to live a fairly independent life with local senior centers and retirement organizations helping with resources and building a community of like-minded people. Encourage anyone over 60 you know to engage with senior centers — this allows them to have higher levels of health, social interaction, and life satisfaction.

Missouri has 215 senior centers/meal sites across the state that are affiliated with an AAA, as well as
one virtual senior center. Senior centers provide an array of services for older adults including meal
services, whereas meal sites are locations solely used to serve meals for older adults.

Missouri has 10 Area agencies on aging that cover every county in the State. The Area Agencies on Aging are the local experts regarding programs and services in their local areas. Programs and services are designed by the Area Agencies on Aging to meet the needs of the individuals in their planning and service areas. Therefore, each agency looks a little different.

Senior Community Service Employment Program

Get paid while learning new skills through the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) at Goodwill.
If you are 55 years of age or older, have a low income*, and are currently unemployed and want to get back into the workforce, MERS Goodwill can help.
MERS Goodwill can connect you with a local nonprofit or other community service agency, where you will get paid to build work experience through on-the-job training. Then, take the skills you learn to advance to regular employment.
