When you're working up a sweat, your body's losing water, of course, but it's also sweating out a ton of minerals, including sodium, potassium, magnesium, phosphate and calcium, also known as electrolytes. "Electrolytes are minerals that can carry an electric charge when they are dissolved in water or body fluids," explains Erin Palinksy-Wade, registered dietitian and author of "2 Day Diabetes Diet."
