Aloha kākou! From August 11 through September 4, our NOAA team will be at sea aboard the NOAA Ship Oscar Elton Sette as part of the Reef Assessment and Monitoring Program (RAMP) research expedition in Papahānaumokuākea National Marine Sanctuary. We would love to invite you to join us live from the sanctuary for two special Ship-to-Shore sessions. During these interactive broadcasts, you will get a firsthand look at what it's like to live and work aboard a NOAA research vessel, meet scientists and members of our crew, and learn how they are studying and protecting one of the most unique biologically and culturally significant places on Earth. Along the way, you'll discover how science, exploration, and ‘ike Hawai‘i come together to help care for our ocean for future generations. According to Hawaiian traditions, traveling into Papahānaumokuākea is a journey from Ao, the realm of light and consciousness, into Pō, the primordial realm of creation and the place where ancestral spirits return. This understanding continues to shape the significance of this extraordinary place and the deep genealogical connection between Kānaka and the natural world. As we prepare for our voyage to Papahānaumokuākea, we reflect on the Kumulipo, a Hawaiian cosmogonical creation chant, reminding us that all life began here in Pō with a single coral polyp. Our RAMP cruise acts as a bridge for us to explore that enduring, reciprocal relationship, using scientific research as one way to better understand, care for, and protect these living relatives and their spaces. Papahānaumokuākea National Marine Sanctuary encompasses 582,570 square miles of Pacific Ocean waters surrounding the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. The sanctuary protects nationally significant natural, cultural, and historical resources while supporting research, community engagement, education, and stewardship.
