The Justice Department has charged 11 people accused of operating a nationwide immigration fraud scheme involving more than 1,000 sham marriages over the past decade. Federal prosecutors allege the operation connected foreign nationals with U.S. citizens willing to marry them so they could pursue legal permanent residency. |
Foreign nationals reportedly paid facilitators about $100,000 for the arrangement and immigration assistance. Participating Americans allegedly received roughly $30,000, while recruiters collected commissions of about $5,000 for each citizen they brought into the scheme. |
The marriages allegedly occurred between 2016 and 2026 across seven states as well as China and Vanuatu. Some couples reportedly met for the first time shortly before obtaining marriage licenses. Prosecutors say participants then staged wedding ceremonies and photographs to make their relationships appear legitimate. |
The network allegedly relied on recruiters and people who prepared immigration paperwork, with the DOJ saying marriage officiants and attorneys were also involved alongside tax preparers and insurance providers. Participants allegedly filed joint tax returns and created other false evidence. Prosecutors say the operation resulted in hundreds of fraudulent green card applications being submitted to U.S. immigration authorities. |

It certainly undermines Americans' confidence in legal immigration itself, as a system built around rules and waiting periods loses credibility when wealthy applicants can allegedly purchase a convincing shortcut around both. |
