How to Dual-Boot Linux and Windows XP
Ready for a nitty-gritty project? This step-by-step story will teach you how to do something few have tried and that Microsoft would probably rather you didn’t: dual-boot Linux and Windows XP. What’s more amazing to me is that PCMag did this with the ultralow-cost ASUS EeePC 900. Man, these guys are brave. Are you?

Your Web Connections Should Be Metered
Curmudgeon Columnist John C. Dvorak and I have disagreed before, but rarely has one of his columns so angered me. Dvorak is essentially turning his back on the Web-browsing public and coming out in support of a metered Internet. Good-bye all-you-can-eat Internet and hello eight “simple” reasons why you should pay for every gigabyte you consume. Dvorak makes a good argument, but he’s dead wrong. Read his column and take a look back at the opinion piece where I argue for the exact opposite.
How to Build the Perfect Budget PC
This system commits all the PC sins on my list: It runs Windows Vista Basic, has 1GB of RAM and Intel integrated graphics. On the other hand, the grand total is $350, and it does ably handle e-mail, document creation, and Web browsing. If you want to build a few good systems for your aged aunt or preteen kids, this could be a good project for you. By the way, if you’re ready to handle this kind of DIY, then you’ll want to browse on over to ExtremeTech. It’s featuring a story on free utilities specifically designed to help system builders adjust and measure component performance and to help burn in new components. Now you have everything you need to start your first DIY project.
AIOs for Home and Home Office
The last time I bought a printer, it was an all-in-one. For most homes, I can’t imagine a better choice, since people typically want to print lots of low-quality pages for school work and personal reminders; they also want high-quality photo output and have a regular need for copying features. I have to admit that I skipped the fax, since I send and receive faxes via MyFax. Still, AIOs have become the new standard for printing at home, and the latest collection PCMag.com rounded up illustrates just how far they’ve come. These units are cheaper and full-featured, and they offer more consistently high output quality than ever before, It’s a win-win-win situation. Read all the reviews to select your future printing friend.
Canon Updates Rebel D-SLR
More good news from Canon: It’s updating the popular digital Rebel line, this time with the Rebel XS. I own a hoary old Digital Rebel EOS that I still love, so these cameras, set to ship this summer, could be worth the wait.
Ten Reasons Why Jim Won't Buy the 3G iPhone
While millions of Mac minions were dancing in the streets on Monday over Apple’s unveiling of the iPhone 3G, ExtremeTech columnist and current iPhone owner Jim Lynch was busy stewing at home, wondering what all the fuss was about. He has no intention of buying a new iPhone. Why? Well, he has ten pretty good reasons (he even throws in a bonus one). My favorite is that he can use the $299 he’ll save to buy new apps for his current iPhone at the App Store. That’s pretty smart thinking. Get the rest of his reasons in the story.

Iomega Summer 2008 Gear-Roundup
Storage isn’t just about, well, storage anymore. Now the photos and video you shove into a half-gig or terabyte drive can play back through PCs, and even high-def output devices. This is what Iomega’s summer lineup is all about. Gearlog got a hands-on look on the latest products.
Webbys 2008: AppScout Hits the Red Carpet
Web “stars” gathered to celebrate themselves at the annual Webby Awards. I didn’t bother to attend—I don’t need to see Obama Girl in person, I can watch her on YouTube—but the AppScout bloggers got front-row seats. Check out their report.
Review: Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures
I grew up reading Conan the Barbarian comic books and watching California’s current governor play the muscled-up hero on the big screen. Now comes news that I can play against countless other Conan-obsessed geeks in the new massive-player Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures (PC and Xbox 360). 1Up has a full review of the game. I read that and now I plan on perusing Netflix for the 1984 classic, Conan the Destroyer.
