INTRODUCTION - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Opportunities come along at unexpected times -- sometimes, they
even seem to involve a little divine intervention!

This week, we check out a new Twitter-like service that was
mentioned by a leading blogger at about the same time that
Twitter went down ... again! All those Twitter enthusiasts
rushed over to check out the new service and many came away
mighty impressed.

We also check out a new SitePoint kit that's designed specially
for aspiring web entrepreneurs, before I take particular
exception over a forums post that blew me away!

We finish off with some tips about the new iPhone -- the device
that's about to take over the entire world!

Happy Reading!

EDITOR'S PERSPECTIVE - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

WHAT'S BETTER THAN TWITTER?

It's funny how these things happen. Plurk [1] is a Twitter-like
[2] site that provides an easy way to showcase and share the
things you do.

Plurk really took off last week after a mention on Leo Laporte's
site [3]. A few other A-list bloggers mentioned it just when
Twitter had one of its regular rests (a bit of server downtime)
and away it went.

I never really got Twitter, but I get Plurk. There's so much
more to see, and the presentation makes sense. Plurk displays
plurks on a timeline and, unlike Twitter, enables image and
video embedding.

Sure, it doesn't have some of Twitter's features [4] but the
development team assures me that there are many more features on
the way: "We're not Twitter. Wait a few months and I think the
differentiation will be more than evident!"

Twitter has a big advantage in being first to market, but Plurk
is, to my mind, such an improvement across a whole range of
areas, that they'll give the King of Tweets a run for their
money.

Contractors: Swiping Clients Is Suicide!

Check out this recent comment from the forums [1] -- it had me
on the verge of a brain hemorrhage!

DaDeViL was working as a sub-contractor for Company A, doing
Company B's work. Company B approached him directly and asked
him if he'd like to work with them directly. A little later,
DaDeViL told Company A he'd be working with Company B directly.

DaDeViL wanted to know why Company A was so outraged at his
decision: "I don't see this at all as being fair."

Is he kidding? Consider that Company A has taken him on and
provided him with work. And what does he do? He steals their
clients! It's unbelievable!

Just so I'm clear, let me explain what's happened here. Company
A does all the hard work attracting the client. They find the
right team. They take all the risk (and there is enormous risk
every time you take on a client). Then the contractor grabs the
client and says "Thanks! I'll have that one!"

Talk about biting the hand that feeds -- DaDeViL has done that,
and then spat in their faces. Yet he genuinely doesn't seem to
realise that he's done anything wrong.

How can you avoid these kinds of pitfalls? What about getting a
mentor? A business mentor can be a great thing. That person can
be someone to bounce ideas off, someone to turn to for advice,
and someone to provide direction on the finer points of business
etiquette. If you're starting out in business, I'd implore you to
seek out an experienced and level-headed business person to talk
strategy with.

A seasoned businessperson can help you avoid business suicide,
and keep you on the path to quality work as a quality operator.
DaDeViL could give this idea some thought!

IPHONE INFO

You didn't think I'd finish without something about the
phone/camera/music player/everything, did you?!

Yep, the iPhone [1] is about to take over the world. But that's
not the only reason you, as a web developer need to be aware of
it.

Firstly, check out the top 10 iPhone-optimized web sites [2].

Want to join the crowd? You'll need some information on
designing a web site for an iPhone [3].

Marketers, check out the very simple and effective ad [4] for
the new iPhone -- the first phone developed to beat the iPhone.
