On This Day 1968: Reformist Dubcek Takes Power in Czechoslovakia

On Jan. 5, 1968, Alexander Dubcek became first secretary of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. He initiated the "Prague Spring," a period of liberalization in the socialist state that prompted violent Soviet suppression a mere 7 months later.

Today in 1941, animator Hayao Miyazaki was born in Japan. Often called the Japanese Walt Disney, his prodigious imagination has given rise to Japan's most popular manga, animated films and television series. Miyazaki's work, which appeals to both children and adults, portrays pastoral beauty and human innocence coupled with darker themes of warfare and destruction.
