| Posted: 06 Jun 2012 01:56 PM PDT Confused about Digital Archery, Target Time Variance Procedure or whatever it is being called? You aren’t the only one. ICANN released a batching doc titled “How ICANN will process applications if many are received” a little over two month’s ago. According to ICANN, the New gTLD program was built so that approximately 500 applications will be evaluated at a single time. If significantly more applications are received, which we know now know that there is (potentially as many as 2,300+) a plan is then to be devised in order to divide the newly sponsored generic top level domain applications into sets of 400 – 500. This has often been referred to as the “batching process” or digital archery. which seems to be as confusing as a simple process can be for those unfamiliar with the inner workings of ICANN. Even industry insiders are frustrated, since very little new information has been made available since the original announcement. According to various sources, the process will be kicking off in only a few days from now, and then the big reveal is only one week from today, scheduled for June 13, 2012. The guys over at gTLD Strategy have put out two informative blog posts recently that try to simplify and explain the basics and processes involved as far as “Digital Archery” is concerned.
You can head over to gtldstrategy.com and read the first part that discusses the actual process and second part that discusses all of the implications. The mini blog post series has been fittingly titled Ready, Aim, What? Digital Archery. About the gTLD Strategy BlogThe gTLD Strategy blog was started by FairWinds Partners, a leading full-service digital strategy consulting firm. Led by industry veterans Josh Bourne and Phil Lodico, FairWinds offers its clients authoritative knowledge on domain names, online trademark enforcement and online traffic optimization. FairWinds created the gTLD Strategy blog as a means of educating and informing brand owners, following ICANN’s decision to open up the domain space to new gTLDs, in the hopes of helping them to best navigate this new environment. | ICANN says new gTLDs list will finally be unveiled on June 13, 2012 Posted: 06 Jun 2012 12:25 PM PDT In an eagerly anticipated confirmation from the domain world and tech community, ICANN has now officially announced that at a special news conference to be held on the original target date of June 13th 2012, they will finally unveil the gTLD applicants and strings. The “big reveal” as everybody is calling it, will finally shed some light on which city’s/regions, companies/brands, various organizations, domain registry startups, and others have applied for .whatever under the new gTLDs program. The big reveal for the applied Generic Top-Level domain names (gTLD’s) will mark a milestone in the history of the internet according to ICANN. Currently there are around 300 – 350 total domain extensions in existence which are active/reserved, including gTLD’s such as COM, NET, and .ORG, about 300 ccTLD’s such as .UK, .DE, .CA, and a handful of sponsored TLD’s including .JOBS, .TRAVEL, and .XXX. Indeed, the new gTLD program is one the most substantive changes to the Domain Name System (DNS) as we know it. The gTLD’s available can easily grow from the 300 – 350 that we are today, to a thousand or two thousand easily. Maybe even tens of thousands of new gTLD’s at one point in time in the not so distant future, according to Frank Schilling.
President and Chief Executive Officer of ICANN Rod Beckstrom will be joined by Senior Vice President Kurt Pritz in answering questions from London based journalists that will be on-location, as well as those from around the world who can participate via remote access that is being made available by phone or live video stream. A live webcast will be made available on the official ICANN website. It will likely be the most watched webcast that ICANN has ever held. The highly anticipated big reveal news conference will take place on Wednesday, June 13 2012 at 13.00-14.00. (12.00-13.00 GMT/UTC) at Kings Place in London, UK. Related posts:

HawkDiscovery is a cloud-based technology platform that lets users monitor content on specific websites and produces alerts notifying them of new activity. David Duckwitz, CitizenHawk's president and chief executive said:
CitizenHawk offers various brand protection, corporate domain management and global domain recovery services according to their website: HawkTypos — a service that can generate literally thousands of domain-name permutations, confirm whether such domains are registered, and identify common ownership, notwithstanding efforts to obfuscate such ownership via asset shielding or inexpensive privacy services. CitizenHawk is the world leader in filing UDRPs, winning 99 percent of our cases and recovering more than 20,000 domains on behalf of our clients. We have taken advantage of our knowledge and experience to create an automated system that enables clients to effectively collect evidence, generate the necessary documentation and complete the entire domain recovery process quickly and cost effectively. | Is ICANN crazy? According to GNSO council chair, YES IT IS: “Internet policy at risk!” Posted: 06 Jun 2012 06:34 AM PDT Stephane Van Gelder is the current chair of the GNSO (Generic Names Supporting Organization) council, one of ICANN’s major policy making bodies. Stéphane has seen the madness first hand for approximately the past year and a half and has had enough of ICANN’s craziness. In a blog post titled “ICANN Gets Crazy… Again!” published yesterday at CircleID he says “it’s time to fix ICANN’s pre-meeting verbal diarrhoea. Before it makes the organisation as a whole, and not just the corps of volunteers that make it work, retch in permanent disgust.” The above are some strong words, don’t you think? But wait… There is a lot more! According to Stéphane, in the days or weeks ahead of its three-a-year international meetings, ICANN goes into hyper-drive. And this time around right before the Prague meeting (from the 24th to the 29th), the usual downpour has turned into a veritable deluge. He points out to yesterday (June 4th as an example.) On that single day, ICANN has published the following eight documents:
Stephane goes on to say… “That’s at the very least 757 pages of stuff to read! Given those facts, any sane person can only have one reaction: that’s no way to run an organisation! Especially one tasked with overseeing the technical well being of the Internet!!” Hello… Is Anybody Listening?Stephane has been raising the alarm on these issues for a while now. His cries of “stop, please stop… no more, we can’t take anymore” have apparently fallen on deaf ears. In fact, it seems as the Prague meeting near, the trend is actually towards more and more documents being released, not less. According to Stéphane “This puts Internet policy at risk.” He explains that ICANN works through volunteers. The 22 person GNSO council is made-up of people giving up their free time. Same goes for the board (although board members are eligible for a small compensation), the other policy making bodies and the “advisory committees” that also participate in the ICANN process. All volunteers who have real jobs and live, and who will be tempted to just skim over just some of the documents that have recently been released in a flurry. Yet most, if not all of those documents are crucial to the policy decisions that ICANN makes. The result? Stéphane says: “Policies risk being drawn up by people who simply cannot process all the information that’s thrown at them in the few days before an ICANN meeting.” Stéphane wrapped up his post by saying:
About the GNSOAccording to the official Generic Names Supporting Organization website, the GNSO helps coordinate generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs) but not country code Top Level Domains (ccTLDs). The GNSO makes policy recommendations to the ICANN Board of Directors. If the Board approves them, the policies are implemented. The GNSO's policy development process lasts, on average, 404 days.
