Digital Archery — What Is It?

Posted: 06 Jun 2012 01:56 PM PDT

Confused about Digital Archery, Target Time Variance Procedure or whatever it is being called? You aren’t the only one. ICANN released a  batching doc titled “How ICANN will process applications if many are received” a little over two month’s ago. According to ICANN, the New gTLD program was built so that approximately 500 applications will be evaluated at a single time. If significantly more applications are received, which we know now know that there is (potentially as many as 2,300+) a plan is then to be devised in order to divide the newly sponsored generic top level domain applications into sets of  400 – 500.

This has often been referred to as the “batching process” or digital archery. which seems to be as confusing as a simple process can be for those unfamiliar with the inner workings of ICANN. Even industry insiders are frustrated, since very little new information has been made available since the original announcement. According to various sources, the process will be kicking off in only a few days from now, and then the big reveal is only one week from today, scheduled for June 13, 2012.

ICANN Batching

The guys over at gTLD Strategy have put out two informative blog posts recently that try to simplify and explain the basics and processes involved as far as “Digital Archery” is concerned.

“Let's start with the basics: what exactly does ICANN mean by "batching"? Well, according to the New gTLD Applicant Guidebook, if ICANN receives substantially more than 500 new gTLD applications, which we know with certainty that it will, it will divide those applications into groups in order to evaluate them.

The first batch will consist of 500 applications, and subsequent batches will each contain 400 applications. In an announcement on May 4, ICANN stated that the TLD Application System (TAS) held 2,091 applications, plus 214 potential applications for which the payments had yet to be reconciled. Assuming that all 2,305 applications make it through, there will be a total of six batches.

It is currently unknown how long it will take ICANN's evaluators to process each batch. ICANN's recently published financial projections for the next few years, however, suggest that it is planning to process two batches per year. If all goes smoothly, that would mean that Batch 6 will complete evaluation in three years, or in 2015.

But this is ICANN, and as we've seen, timelines for various initiatives have a tendency to get… prolonged. If contentions and objections arise, then each batch could take much longer. In the event that each batch takes a year to process, Batch 6 applications could be pushed back until 2018 or later.”

You can head over to gtldstrategy.com and read the first part that discusses the actual process and second part that discusses all of the implications. The mini blog post series has been fittingly titled Ready, Aim, What? Digital Archery.

ICANN says new gTLDs list will finally be unveiled on June 13, 2012

Posted: 06 Jun 2012 12:25 PM PDT

In an eagerly anticipated confirmation from the domain world and tech community, ICANN has now officially announced that at a special news conference to be held on the original target date of June 13th 2012, they will finally unveil the gTLD applicants and strings.

The “big reveal” as everybody is calling it, will finally shed some light on which city’s/regions, companies/brands, various organizations, domain registry startups, and others have applied for .whatever under the new gTLDs program. The big reveal for the applied Generic Top-Level domain names (gTLD’s) will mark a milestone in the history of the internet according to ICANN.

Currently there are around 300 – 350 total domain extensions in existence which are active/reserved, including gTLD’s such as COM, NET, and .ORG, about 300 ccTLD’s such as .UK, .DE, .CA, and a handful of sponsored TLD’s including .JOBS, .TRAVEL, and .XXX.

Indeed, the new gTLD program is one the most substantive changes to the Domain Name System (DNS) as we know it. The gTLD’s available can easily grow from the 300 – 350 that we are today, to a thousand or two thousand easily. Maybe even tens of thousands of new gTLD’s at one point in time in the not so distant future, according to Frank Schilling.

“The big brands that were not in the first round of applications will exert immense pressure to have the application window open again and there will be 10,000 strings in round 2, followed by 30,000 more in round 3.  Once again, I predict no shortage of willing participants who hope to emulate the Fortune 1,000.

With the last of Pandora free from her box you can expect to see technical standards change more quickly because corporate America, Europe and Asia will demand it. Get ready for some new faces to show up at ICANN meetings of the future. Inviting the Fortune 500′s marketing department into the root will change the outcome of ICANN's bottom up consensus.”

President and Chief Executive Officer of ICANN Rod Beckstrom will be joined by Senior Vice President Kurt Pritz in answering questions from London based journalists that will be on-location, as well as those from around the world who can participate via remote access that is being made available by phone or live video stream. A live webcast will be made available on the official ICANN website. It will likely be the most watched webcast that ICANN has ever held.

The highly anticipated big reveal news conference will take place on Wednesday, June 13 2012 at 13.00-14.00. (12.00-13.00 GMT/UTC) at Kings Place in London, UK.

CitizenHawk rolls out a sophisticated cloud-based online brand protection platform

Posted: 06 Jun 2012 07:59 AM PDT

California based CitizenHawk, a global provider of online brand protection and enforcement services, has announced the launch of a powerful online brand protection tool called “HawkDiscovery” that enables users to search the entire web and detect use of trademarked terms and phrases, helping uncover instances of brand abuse ranging from counterfeiting to domain name abuse and cybersquatting.

HawkDiscovery is a cloud-based technology platform that lets users monitor content on specific websites and produces alerts notifying them of new activity. HawkDiscovery features a fully integrated workflow and case management system that acts as a kind of Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system for brand protection. The system lets users analyze and assess particular instances of online infringement, determine appropriate responses, and manage remediation activities from initial detection through final resolution – with every action tracked, recorded and shared with appropriate personnel.

CitizenHawk HawkDiscovery

David Duckwitz, CitizenHawk's president and chief executive said:

”Companies realize their brands are most precious corporate assets, and they invest considerable time and money promoting them to consumers, investors and others. Unfortunately, well known and popular brands are particularly attractive to typosquatters and others seeking to exploit them on the Internet. Marketing, legal, compliance and IT professionals can now fight back with cost effective tools that not only can uncover such abuse, but effectively respond to it.”

CitizenHawk offers various brand protection, corporate domain management and global domain recovery services according to their website:

HawkTypos — a service that can generate literally thousands of domain-name permutations, confirm whether such domains are registered, and identify common ownership, notwithstanding efforts to obfuscate such ownership via asset shielding or inexpensive privacy services.

HawkUDRP — a powerful tool for pursuing – and winning – UDRPs (Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy). CitizenHawk is the world leader in filing UDRPs, winning 99 percent of our cases and recovering more than 20,000 domains on behalf of our clients. We have taken advantage of our knowledge and experience to create an automated system that enables clients to effectively collect evidence, generate the necessary documentation and complete the entire domain recovery process quickly and cost effectively.

About CitizenHawk

CitizenHawk is a closely held, venture capital-backed company. Primary investors of the company include Maveron LLC, a prominent VC firm co-founded by Starbucks chief executive Howard Schultz. Other noteworthy investors include Gary Kremen, founder of Match.com, and Mark Vadon, founder and chairman of BlueNile.com.

Is ICANN crazy? According to GNSO council chair, YES IT IS: “Internet policy at risk!”

Posted: 06 Jun 2012 06:34 AM PDT

Stephane Van Gelder is the current chair of the GNSO (Generic Names Supporting Organization) council, one of ICANN’s major policy making bodies. Stéphane has seen the madness first hand for approximately the past year and a half and has had enough of ICANN’s craziness. In a blog post titled “ICANN Gets Crazy… Again!” published yesterday at CircleID he says “it’s time to fix ICANN’s pre-meeting verbal diarrhoea. Before it makes the organisation as a whole, and not just the corps of volunteers that make it work, retch in permanent disgust.”

The above are some strong words, don’t you think? But wait… There is a lot more! According to Stéphane, in the days or weeks ahead of its three-a-year international meetings, ICANN goes into hyper-drive. And this time around right before the Prague meeting (from the 24th to the 29th), the usual downpour has turned into a veritable deluge. He points out to yesterday (June 4th as an example.)

ICANN GNSO Generic Names Supporting Organization

On that single day, ICANN has published the following eight documents:

Stephane goes on to say… “That’s at the very least 757 pages of stuff to read! Given those facts, any sane person can only have one reaction: that’s no way to run an organisation! Especially one tasked with overseeing the technical well being of the Internet!!”

Hello… Is Anybody Listening?

Stephane has been raising the alarm on these issues for a while now. His cries of “stop, please stop… no more, we can’t take anymore” have apparently fallen on deaf ears. In fact, it seems as the Prague meeting near, the trend is actually towards more and more documents being released, not less. According to Stéphane “This puts Internet policy at risk.”

He explains that ICANN works through volunteers. The 22 person GNSO council is made-up of people giving up their free time. Same goes for the board (although board members are eligible for a small compensation), the other policy making bodies and the “advisory committees” that also participate in the ICANN process.

All volunteers who have real jobs and live, and who will be tempted to just skim over just some of the documents that have recently been released in a flurry. Yet most, if not all of those documents are crucial to the policy decisions that ICANN makes. The result? Stéphane says: “Policies risk being drawn up by people who simply cannot process all the information that’s thrown at them in the few days before an ICANN meeting.”

Stéphane wrapped up his post by saying:

“Let’s face it, the fact that ICANN cannot get itself organised to have a steady feed of documents throughout the year, rather than a major rush of them in the two weeks before an ICANN meeting, doesn’t say much good about the organisation that’s supposed to make sure the Internet’s addressing and naming systems are a-ok. It’s time to fix ICANN’s pre-meeting verbal diarrhoea. Before it makes the organisation as a whole, and not just the corps of volunteers that make it work, retch in permanent disgust.”

About the GNSO

According to the official Generic Names Supporting Organization website, the GNSO helps coordinate generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs) but not country code Top Level Domains (ccTLDs). The GNSO makes policy recommendations to the ICANN Board of Directors. If the Board approves them, the policies are implemented. The GNSO's policy development process lasts, on average, 404 days.
