Posted: 30 Nov 2012 03:00 AM PST Appropriately, the Boston Foodie refers to this enormous concoction as "the Big Dig of pastry engineering." This cannoli, the world's largest, was made last year at the New England Dessert Showcase. |
Rolling Stones Albums Ranked From Worst to Best Posted: 30 Nov 2012 02:00 AM PST The Rolling Stones have been together for fifty years and have released 25 albums. It couldn't have been easy for Nerve to rank them all, but I cannot argue with their #1 pick. However, I personally would have placed Exile on Main Street a little higher than #10. Leftovers Battle For Survival In MELTDOWN Posted: 30 Nov 2012 01:00 AM PST MeltDown is a clever animated short that shows what happens inside your refrigerator when all of your leftover food battles for survival against the frozen forces of Ice. It was directed by Dave Green, and features the voice of David Cross as a noble ham sandwich, which is (arguably) the best voiceover job he's ever had! --via GeekTyrant |

Planned Cities Seen From Space Posted: 29 Nov 2012 11:00 PM PST Cities that are planned before they are populated have a sense of order that can really be appreciated when seen from above. You'd expect that from modern cities, like Brasilia or Canberra, but the beauty of Palmanova, Italy, pictured here, is especially pleasing, as it was built in 1593. See the whole collection at Wired. Posted: 29 Nov 2012 10:00 PM PST Tonya Herron is one of the many winners of National Geographic's annual photography contest. She snapped this picture of a Great White Shark in False Bay, South Africa. Did the little seal make it? I don't know, but the title of the photo is "The Great Escape." You can find other winning photographs at the link. |
The New Face of Autism Therapy Posted: 29 Nov 2012 09:00 PM PST This is Bandit, a robot specially designed by a team at the University of Southern California to interact with autistic children in a non-threatening manner. It can speak, change facial expressions, move around, play games, and make decisions on what to do next. In preliminary experiments with 15 autistic children, interactions with the robot for as little as five minutes can cause the child to become more vocal and sociable.

Panzer, a 6-year-old Lab mix, has made history by being the first dog ever to be awarded a restraining order. It should be noted that the dog was granted a restraining order along with his owner, a 38-year-old mother, and her son. The boyfriend of Panzer's owner, allegedly violent, can no longer see the dog or the family. While it may not seem like a big deal, it is.
This means that not only is Panzer's protection an animal rights issue, but indirectly may change the lives of many abused women now that their pets can be protected. Panzer is currently living with a foster family and the mother is with her son, temporarily living in a shelter. They will be reunited once the woman is able to move into a safe environment. |

Evidence of Water Ice on Mercury Posted: 29 Nov 2012 05:00 PM PST Data sent back to earth from the MESSENGER spacecraft shows that Mercury holds water ice and other frozen materials. We think of Mercury as a hot planet, but there are deep craters near the planet's poles are never touched by sunlight. Still, any water ice in the craters is buried under other materials.

Photo: Cop Giving a Homeless Man Shoes Posted: 29 Nov 2012 04:00 PM PST It's cold in New York City--no time to be without shoes. But one homeless man lacked them...until a cop came by. A visitor from Arizona, also in law enforcement, spotted their encounter:
The unknown cop has since been identified as NYPD Officer Lawrence DePrimo. Original Facebook Post and News Article -via Daily of the Day |
Jimmy Kimmel Pranks Coffee Drinkers Posted: 29 Nov 2012 03:00 PM PST Guys, remind me to never-ever-ever trust anyone who interviews me claiming to work for Jimmy Kimmel Live. I have seen far too many people fall for his pranks, sure you would think it would be easy to tell the truth but there is the added pressure of being on television that people forget about. I know it seems far-fetched that I would ever be actually interviewed by someone working for Jimmy Kimmel Live, but I happen to live a block away from the studio and I see them doing these interviews all the time. With that out of the way - I should probably mention that I am very conflicted about Starbucks as a brand. On one hand, I hate the idea of paying $4.00 (much less $7.00) for a cup of coffee. Coffee is coffee, right? On the other hand, I really really like the Pumpkin Spice Latte - the only redeemable quality about Starbucks in my opinion. Argh, I don't know what to believe anymore! What are your opinions of the mega-brand coffee company? |

Posted: 29 Nov 2012 02:00 PM PST Creative and creepy! Can you believe these baby heads are made of solid white chocolate? They are about the size of a real newborn's head. Admire all you want, but the thought of chomping your teeth into them is unnerving. Made by Annabel de Vetten of Conjurer's Kitchen, the heads are a part of the Eat Your Heart Out 2012 food art exhibition in London. Link -Thanks, Emmylou Cakehead! |
7 Bizarre Prehistoric Versions of Modern Day Animals Posted: 29 Nov 2012 01:30 PM PST
I love dinosaurs, a pure and simple fact. So how could I not post about this great list of 7 Bizarre Prehistoric Versions of Modern Day Animals? Above is an image of the real-life monster best known as the "BoarCroc" or the "dinosaur slicer." It's a giant super-crocodile that may have dined on dinosaurs. The little kid inside of me is going crazy with excitement. As a cub scout (pre-boy scout) as part of a campingtrip I got to spend a night in The Field Museum in Chicago, where I am from. We camped out in the dinosaur exhibit because that is only logical place for a boy of 11 to spend his night in the museum. Needless to say I loved it, and that same love is apparent as I read about this "BoarCroc."
Be sure to check out the entire list, Link. |

Artichokes are secretly one of my favorite foods, but don't tell my parents that. I don't want them knowing that after all these years "eat your vegetables" really worked. Never give in! So here is what you need if you want to produce these artful artichokes.
If you think you are up to the challenge continue here for the full instructions. |
Posted: 29 Nov 2012 12:00 PM PST By placing pork fat on a keyboard, Latvian artist Voldemars Dudums was able to convince hungry tomtits to tweet. Is it silly? Dudums says:
The birds have, so far, 4,322 Twitter followers. Or about 30 times as many as I do. So I'm feeling rather jealous right now. |

Quick, better legendary creature (real or imaginary) unicorns or narwhals? Trick question. Kozyndan is here to let us know that all narwhals actually get their horns from unicorns. What a magical creature. Okay, so maybe not really but you still have to applaud the creativeness. The image is a sculpture from Kozyndan's new gallery show that opened November 16th in Toronto. Ironically, the show displays 4 resin-based sculptures of the unicorn-narwhal at the Narwhal Gallery. Link | Via The Monica Bird |
Photos from Comic Con Express Bangalore 2012 Posted: 29 Nov 2012 11:00 AM PST Bangalore is the Silicon Valley of India -although much bigger, with eight million people and innumerable tech companies. Surprisingly, the city has never hosted a comics convention until this year. Comic Con Express was held in September, and hordes of cosplayers turned out, dressed as both Indian pop culture and comic book characters and those familiar in the west as well. Christopher Lee Reads The Original Nightmare Before Christmas Poem Posted: 29 Nov 2012 10:00 AM PST Christopher Lee is probably best known as Count Dracula from the Hammer studio horror films, or more recently as Saruman from the Lord Of The Rings trilogy, but regardless of the role he's most known for, one thing's for certain- he has an amazing voice. Sit back and enjoy his reading of the classic Tim Burton poem that inspired the movie Nightmare Before Christmas, it's better than the movie...okay, not really, but it's still darn good! --via Geek Art Gallery |

Fox Sends Text Message from Stolen Phone Posted: 29 Nov 2012 09:00 AM PST Norwegian teenager Lars Andreas Bjercke downloaded an intriguing app that imitates the sounds of rabbits, in order to attract foxes. It worked very well. After several nights of circling the yard where the phone was left, a fox took the phone and ran off! The theft was captured on video. But the story gets even better.

The Evolution of Life on Earth Posted: 29 Nov 2012 08:30 AM PST The Earth is estimated to be about 4.5 billion years old. It's hard to grasp such a amount of time, so AsapSCIENCE took those billions of years and compressed it into a theoretical 24-hour day, so we can see how relatively little of it concerns us. -via Buzzfeed |
