Rolling Stones Albums Ranked From Worst to Best

Posted: 30 Nov 2012 02:00 AM PST

The Rolling Stones have been together for fifty years and have released 25 albums. It couldn't have been easy for Nerve to rank them all, but I cannot argue with their #1 pick. However, I personally would have placed Exile on Main Street a little higher than #10. Link -via Flavorwire

Leftovers Battle For Survival In MELTDOWN

MeltDown is a clever animated short that shows what happens inside your refrigerator when all of your leftover food battles for survival against the frozen forces of Ice.

It was directed by Dave Green, and features the voice of David Cross as a noble ham sandwich, which is (arguably) the best voiceover job he's ever had!

Planned Cities Seen From Space

Cities that are planned before they are populated have a sense of order that can really be appreciated when seen from above. You'd expect that from modern cities, like Brasilia or Canberra, but the beauty of Palmanova, Italy, pictured here, is especially pleasing, as it was built in 1593. See the whole collection at Wired. The New Face of Autism Therapy

Posted: 29 Nov 2012 09:00 PM PST

This is Bandit, a robot specially designed by a team at the University of Southern California to interact with autistic children in a non-threatening manner. It can speak, change facial expressions, move around, play games, and make decisions on what to do next. In preliminary experiments with 15 autistic children, interactions with the robot for as little as five minutes can cause the child to become more vocal and sociable.

That may seem surprising, since robots are hardly known for warmth and sociability. Yet there is increasing evidence that kids with autism respond more naturally to machines than they do to people. Psychologist Simon Baron-Cohen, the director of the Autism Research Center at the University of Cambridge in England, along with other autism experts, believes that robots, computers and electronic gadgets may be appealing because they are predictable, unlike people. You can pretty much guess what a computer is going to do next about 90 percent of the time, but human interactions obey very few entirely predictable laws. And this, Baron-Cohen explains, is difficult for children with autism. “They find unlawful situations toxic,” he says. “They can’t cope. So they turn away from people and turn to the world of objects.”

Dog Gets Restraining Order

Posted: 29 Nov 2012 08:00 PM PST

Photo: WikiMedia

Panzer, a 6-year-old Lab mix, has made history by being the first dog ever to be awarded a restraining order. It should be noted that the dog was granted a restraining order along with his owner, a 38-year-old mother, and her son. The boyfriend of Panzer's owner, allegedly violent, can no longer see the dog or the family. While it may not seem like a big deal, it is.

In all, 22 states and Washington, D.C., include pets in protection orders. According to animal protection agencies, some 70 percent of abused women report that their batterers threatened to kill their pets. Making matters worse is that 50 percent of victims delay leaving abusive homes out of fear that their animals might be harmed.

This means that not only is Panzer's protection an animal rights issue, but indirectly may change the lives of many abused women now that their pets can be protected.

Panzer is currently living with a foster family and the mother is with her son, temporarily living in a shelter. They will be reunited once the woman is able to move into a safe environment.

Evidence of Water Ice on Mercury

Posted: 29 Nov 2012 05:00 PM PST

mercury

Data sent back to earth from the MESSENGER spacecraft shows that Mercury holds water ice and other frozen materials. We think of Mercury as a hot planet, but there are deep craters near the planet's poles are never touched by sunlight. Still, any water ice in the craters is buried under other materials.

MESSENGER uses neutron spectroscopy to measure average hydrogen concentrations within Mercury's radar-bright regions. Water-ice concentrations are derived from the hydrogen measurements. "The neutron data indicate that Mercury's radar-bright polar deposits contain, on average, a hydrogen-rich layer more than tens of centimeters thick beneath a surficial layer 10 to 20 centimeters thick that is less rich in hydrogen," writes David Lawrence, a MESSENGER Participating Scientist based at The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory and the lead author of one of the papers. "The buried layer has a hydrogen content consistent with nearly pure water ice."

Data from MESSENGER's Mercury Laser Altimeter (MLA) — which has fired more than 10 million laser pulses at Mercury to make detailed maps of the planet's topography — corroborate the radar results and Neutron Spectrometer measurements of Mercury's polar region, writes Gregory Neumann of the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. In a second paper, Neumann and his colleagues report that the first MLA measurements of the shadowed north polar regions reveal irregular dark and bright deposits at near-infrared wavelength near Mercury's north pole.

Photo: Cop Giving a Homeless Man Shoes

cop

It's cold in New York City--no time to be without shoes. But one homeless man lacked them...until a cop came by. A visitor from Arizona, also in law enforcement, spotted their encounter:

Right when I was about to approach, one of your officers came up behind him. The officer said, ‘I have these size 12 boots for you, they are all-weather. Let’s put them on and take care of you.’ The officer squatted down on the ground and proceeded to put socks and the new boots on this man. The officer expected NOTHING in return and did not know I was watching*. I have been in law enforcement for 17 years. I was never so impressed in my life. I did not get the officer’s name. It is important, I think, for all of us to remember the real reason we are in this line of work. The reminder this officer gave to our profession in his presentation of human kindness has not been lost on myself or any of the Arizona law enforcement officials with whom this story has been shared.

The unknown cop has since been identified as NYPD Officer Lawrence DePrimo.

Jimmy Kimmel Pranks Coffee Drinkers

Posted: 29 Nov 2012 03:00 PM PST

Guys, remind me to never-ever-ever trust anyone who interviews me claiming to work for Jimmy Kimmel Live. I have seen far too many people fall for his pranks, sure you would think it would be easy to tell the truth but there is the added pressure of being on television that people forget about. I know it seems far-fetched that I would ever be actually interviewed by someone working for Jimmy Kimmel Live, but I happen to live a block away from the studio and I see them doing these interviews all the time.

With that out of the way - I should probably mention that I am very conflicted about Starbucks as a brand. On one hand, I hate the idea of paying $4.00 (much less $7.00) for a cup of coffee. Coffee is coffee, right? On the other hand, I really really like the Pumpkin Spice Latte - the only redeemable quality about Starbucks in my opinion. Argh, I don't know what to believe anymore!

What are your opinions of the mega-brand coffee company?

7 Bizarre Prehistoric Versions of Modern Day Animals

Posted: 29 Nov 2012 01:30 PM PST

Photo: Todd Marshall |Time.com

I love dinosaurs, a pure and simple fact. So how could I not post about this great list of 7 Bizarre Prehistoric Versions of Modern Day Animals? Above is an image of the real-life monster best known as the "BoarCroc" or the "dinosaur slicer." It's a giant super-crocodile that may have dined on dinosaurs.

The little kid inside of me is going crazy with excitement. As a cub scout (pre-boy scout) as part of a campingtrip I got to spend a night in The Field Museum in Chicago, where I am from. We camped out in the dinosaur exhibit because that is only logical place for a boy of 11 to spend his night in the museum. Needless to say I loved it, and that same love is apparent as I read about this "BoarCroc."

Anyone who's watched more than two hours of the Discovery Channel knows that crocodiles are sharp-toothed, armored, writhing instruments of death ... but only if they're in about five feet of water. Ten feet farther on shore and suddenly they're 800 pounds of slow-moving, useless leather with sharp teeth at one end. If nothing else, the fact that crocodiles can't and probably won't chase you on land is the most comforting characteristic of what would otherwise be a relentless murder machine.

Except that about 100 million years ago, that wasn't the case. Kaprosuchus saharicus was evolution's stab at giving one predator every advantage except the ability to fly, making it completely unbeatable. Paleontologists often casually talk about them galloping after dinosaurs on their long legs like that's just a thing crocodiles do regularly.

Decorative Artichokes

Putting the art in artichoke, Knuckle Salad has this handy guide of how to make beautiful decorative artichokes for the holiday season. I know what you are thinking, who would want to decorate their home with artichokes? Well, take a look at these and get back to me.

Photo: Knuckle Salad

Artichokes are secretly one of my favorite foods, but don't tell my parents that. I don't want them knowing that after all these years "eat your vegetables" really worked. Never give in! So here is what you need if you want to produce these artful artichokes.

  • A Styrofoam ball. A three-and-a-half-inch ball will give you a roughly life-sized artichoke, but you can make them any size you like.
  • Fabric. Half a yard should be more than enough.
  • Straight pins.
  • A plastic bottle cap (optional).

If you think you are up to the challenge continue here for the full instructions.

Tweeting Birds

By placing pork fat on a keyboard, Latvian artist Voldemars Dudums was able to convince hungry tomtits to tweet. Is it silly? Dudums says:

Yes, one may say it is quite silly, but if you look what people are sometimes writing on Twitter, then I think the tomtits messages still okay.

The birds have, so far, 4,322 Twitter followers. Or about 30 times as many as I do. So I'm feeling rather jealous right now.

Okay, so maybe not really but you still have to applaud the creativeness. The image is a sculpture from Kozyndan's new gallery show that opened November 16th in Toronto. Ironically, the show displays 4 resin-based sculptures of the unicorn-narwhal at the Narwhal Gallery.

Fox Sends Text Message from Stolen Phone

Posted: 29 Nov 2012 09:00 AM PST

Norwegian teenager Lars Andreas Bjercke downloaded an intriguing app that imitates the sounds of rabbits, in order to attract foxes. It worked very well. After several nights of circling the yard where the phone was left, a fox took the phone and ran off! The theft was captured on video. But the story gets even better.

Lars the later called the phone and, surprisingly, the fox answered.

"There was a crackling sound and some noise," Lars told Verdens Gang.

The next day, Lars's friend wondered why he had sent him the odd text message. The message was in strange letters and numbers. Lars knew that the sender was the fox.

"I FRY o a0ab 34348tu åaugjoi zølbmosdji jsøg ijio sjiw," it said in the message.
