Wikipedia Completes $6 Million Fundraising Goal

When in doubt, just ask. That is what Wikipedia did and now has managed to achieve its fundraising goal of $6 million via donations from site users and will continue to stay online this year.

So why does one of the world’s five most popular web properties ask for financial support from its users? Wikimedia founder explains why they were asking for donations earlier to support Wikipedia

Wikipedia is built differently from almost every other top 50 websites. We have a small number of paid staff, just twenty-three. Wikipedia content is free to use by anyone for any purpose. Our annual expenses are less than six million dollars. Wikipedia is run by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation, which I founded in 2003.

At its core, Wikipedia is driven by a global community of more than 150,000 volunteers - all dedicated to sharing knowledge freely. Over almost eight years, these volunteers have contributed more than 11 million articles in 265 languages. More than 275 million people come to our website every month to access information, free of charge and free of advertising.

TGdaily says Wikipedia launched a “please save our website” fund drive campaign on or about Christmas Eve. At that point, they had raised $3.8 million dollars of their $6 million goal. In just five days, as of January 1, 2009, they had surpassed the $6 million goal by raising an additional $2.3 million!

That is surely a happy new year start for them. At least Wikipedia has survived the economic recession this year…

Download Free JPG Magazine PDF Issues

Posted: 02 Jan 2009 08:58 AM PST

JPG Magazine is a very popular photography magazine, published six times a year by 8020 Media, and now you can download free archives of the magazine, as it is closing down in a few days.

jpg magazine logo JPG Magazine has a strong community of  nearly 200,000 photographers who share their photos and stories online, review the work of others, and help make the magazine by voting for their favorite photos. It was a proud moment when a photograph was selected for publication in JPG Magazine. Moreover, if your photo is published, you get a free year subscription and $100!

Now hit by the economic recession, jpgmag.com will shut down on January 5, 2009. So now is the time to download free archives as pdf of previous JPG magazine back issues, outtakes, and photo challenge selections. I downloaded some JPG Mag issues and the photograph collections are truly amazing.

You could subscribe JPG magazine for $20 for 6 issues (in US), but with growing popularity of free online photo sharing services like Flickr, their business model must surely be hit. You can also buy the first six issues which were the inspiration for the new JPG Magazine.

Make note of your favorite photographers, with names and URLs of some of the people you’d like to stay in touch with. You can keep track of your friends at the Unofficial JPG Magazine Group on Flickr (over 18000 members), a group for friends of JPG Magazine.
