Expansion of US Youth Soccer National League continues

Teams announced Aug. 2, for 2010-2011 National League season on USYouthSoccer.org
FRISCO, Texas (May 3, 2010) - US Youth Soccer announces today, as part of the continued development of the US Youth Soccer National League http://www.usyouthsoccer.org/link.asp?l=23&mid=698003&lid=108231 that the US Youth Soccer Board of Directors has adopted the expansion of the League from eight teams in each gender age group (Under-15, Under-16 and Under-17 Boys and Girls) to 16 teams beginning with the 2010-2011 season. With the expansion, the National League will continue the tradition of bolstering teams that have built a history as being the nation's best through proven historical success in US Youth Soccer programs, specifically the regional leagues.
The League will begin its fourth season in the 2010-2011 seasonal year that goes from Sept. 1, 2010 through Aug. 31, 2011. As a result of team success, select teams automatically qualify for the 2010-2011 National League season.
Continuing with tradition, the first group of teams to qualify consists of the top four finishers in the Under-15 and Under-16 age groups http://www.usyouthsoccer.org/link.asp?l=24&mid=698003&lid=108231 from the 2009-2010 National League season. The 2010 US Youth Soccer Regional Champions in the Under-14 through Under-16 age groups will automatically qualify for the League, as well. The most recent League expansion came with the 2008-2009 seasonal year, where the competition was expanded to include the Under-17 age group, girls and boys.

"The decision to expand the National League is another example of US Youth Soccer’s continued commitment to improve upon the opportunities for players, grow the game of soccer and US Youth Soccer programs. The League will continue to carefully select teams based on each teams' individual proven success in US Youth Soccer programs including the US Youth Soccer Regional Leagues and the National Championship Series. In short, these are the best teams in an age group, who have a track record of success."
The National League is an extension of the highly successful US Youth Soccer Regional Leagues [US Youth Soccer Region I (East) Premier League, Midwest Regional League, Region III (South) Premier League and Far West Regional League] in which the top teams are eligible to continue the path of succession into the National League where the ultimate prize is qualifying for the prestigious National Championships. Through the National League, teams play in meaningful matches against top competition from across the country for the League title and two slots to the annual National Championships. The League provides elite club soccer players seeking to advance their college, professional and U.S. National Team aspirations with meaningful matches against top teams providing collegiate coaches tremendous scouting opportunities.
Teams eligible to apply for the National League are those that played in the top level of their respective Regional Premier League during the 2009-2010 season, as well as all 2010 Regional Championship semifinalists. Each gender age group will be split into two eight-team divisions featuring teams from each of US Youth Soccer’s four regions competing in round robin play within each division.
The seven game season will begin with competition in late November/early December (all teams playing four games at one site) followed by participation in one of two other locations per gender in January through March. Specific locations are expected to be announced in late May when the team application process begins.
Information will be available on USYouthSoccer.org. The deadline to submit team applications is July 9, 2010 at 5 p.m. EST. The 2010-2011 National League teams will be announced Monday, Aug. 2.
Since its inception, National League representatives have captured a combined eight National Championships. In 2008, seven of the eight championship finals slots in the Under-15 and 16 age groups were won by National League teams, which resulted in the League's first four National Championships. The League notched four more National Championship titles in 2009 including the Under-15 Boys (Baltimore Casa Mia Bays) and Girls (San Diego Surf) as well as Under-16 Boys (Dallas Texans 93 Red) and Under-17 Girls (Eclipse Select).
The National Championships, established in 1976, is the culmination of the US Youth Soccer National Championship Series where the nation's champions are crowned in six age groups for boys and girls. The U.S. Soccer Federation initiated the open youth championships with the James P. McGuire Cup, the oldest trophy in youth sport, (awarded to the Under-19 Boys National Champion) in 1935. This year, 2010, marks the 75th Anniversary of the storied cup.
