NBA: LA Lakers 114, Phoenix 106

PHOENIX (UPI) -- Back-to-back hook shots by Pau Gasol ignited a rush late in the third quarter Friday that carried the Los Angeles Lakers to a 114-106 win over Phoenix.

Kobe Bryant scored 25 points and Lamar Odom claimed 17 rebounds, but it was Gasol who touched off the key stretch that allowed the Lakers to take control.

The score was tied at 76-76 when Gasol made a hook shot with 3:30 to go in the third period. After Jason Richardson missed a 3-pointer for Phoenix, Gasol made another hook shot that was part of a quarter-ending 11-3 run.

Los Angeles led by as many as 12 points in the fourth period.

Gasol came close to a triple-double with 21 points, eight rebounds and 10 assists. The Lakers have won their first two games of the season.

Grant Hill scored 21 points and was one of five Phoenix players in double figures.

Jackson signs with Chargers

SAN DIEGO (UPI) -- The San Diego Chargers announced Friday receiver Vincent Jackson has signed a one-year deal and will return to action after a three-game suspension.

Jackson is under suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy and will be eligible to play for the first time Nov. 28 against Indianapolis.

Jackson, 27, had been involved in a contract holdout since the start of training camp, but the players' union urged him to sign a one-year deal so he would not cost himself a full season of pension eligibility.

"It feels good to be with my teammates," Jackson said. "I've missed football more than you can imagine. Right now, I'm just looking forward to being able to practice and get back on the field. My only concern is doing whatever I can to contribute and help the team."

Jackson had the best year of his career in 2009, catching 68 passes for 1,167 yards and nine touchdowns. He is in his sixth season with the Chargers.

Irwin shoots age on Champions Tour

SAN ANTONIO (UPI) -- Hale Irwin shot his age with a 6-under-par 65 Friday, giving him a share of the lead after one round of the AT&T Championship.

Irwin celebrated his 65th birthday in June and by accomplishing the rare feat of shooting his age in competition he moved into a tie for first place with John Cook, Larry Nelson, Mark Wiebe and Chien Soon Lu.

A victory would make Irwin the oldest winner in the history of the Champions Tour. He holds the Champions Tour record with 45 victories, the last of which came three years ago.

"First time ever I've shot my age," said Irwin, who won the U.S. Open in 1974, 1979 and 1990. "I'm encouraged with how I'm hitting my shots. I'm pleased with my results."

Cook is a two-time winner of this event and Nelson captured the tournament in 2001. Nelson, 63, has not won since 2004.

"It's very difficult for guys our age to have three good days in a row," Nelson said. "I thought I had a good shot at shooting my age today, too."

Gene Jones, Chip Beck, Keith Fergus, Dan Forsman, Russ Cochran, Steve Lowery, Rod Spittle, Javier Sanchez, Kirk Hanefeld and Mark Calcavecchia were all just a shot behind at the Oak Hills Country Club.

Irwin's round was highlighted by a 30-foot chip-in for eagle at the par-5 15th and he finished his round by holing a 10-foot putt for par.

Mike Fetchick holds the record for oldest Champions Tour winner, having claimed the 1985 Hilton Head Seniors International at age 63.

NHL: New Jersey 2, Anaheim 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. (UPI) -- Patrik Elias put New Jersey in front 1:54 into the third period Friday and the Devils held on for a much-needed 2-1 victory over Anaheim.

New Jersey ended a three-game losing streak with its third win of the season, tying the Devils with Buffalo, Florida, Edmonton and Phoenix for the fewest in the NHL.

Martin Brodeur, having suffered from a lack of scoring support this season, came through with 28 saves to get the win. New Jersey came into the game having scored a league-low 17 goals in its first 10 contests.

Jason Blake beat Brodeur on the power play 8:07 into the second period to put the Ducks in front, but Jamie Langenbrunner tied it 2:32 later with his first goal of the season.

Elias produced the game-winner on a slap shot that eluded Jonas Hiller, who stopped 26-of-28 shots.
