Sports Update For Indiana Sunday November 28, 2010 | Baseball Report: Marlins ink Vazquez to 1-year deal MIAMI (UPI) -- The Florida Marlins have agreed to terms with veteran free agent pitcher Javier Vazquez on a one-year contract, sources told MLB.com Sunday. The Web site, citing "multiple sources," said Vazquez, 34, will join the Marlins pending the results of a physical. Vazquez, a 13-year veteran, went 10-10 with a 5.32 ERA with the Yankees last season. He broke in with the Montreal Expos at a time Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria owned that club. Vazquez is known for his durability, tossing 157 1/3 innings last season. He logged at least 200 innings each year from 2005-09, which could help a Florida team whose starters last year were ranked 27th in total innings pitched, MLB.com noted. Vazquez will join a rotation that also boasts Josh Johnson, Ricky Nolasco, Anibal Sanchez and Chris Volstad. Karlsson opened the final round three strokes behind Poulter but rallied for a 5-under-par 67 Sunday to get to 14-under 274, tying Poulter who shot 2-under 70 Sunday. Both players had birdies the first time they played the par-5, 620-yard 18th hole in the playoff. But the second time around, Karlsson knocked his third shot within 4 feet while Poulter was 30 feet out. Poulter was assessed a 1-stroke penalty for dropping his ball on his marker and moving it. He ended up with a 6 on the hole and Karlsson made his short putt to claim his 11th European Tour title. Karlsson pulled into contention by opening Sunday with two birdies and an eagle on the par-4 third hole. He had bogeys at Nos. 4 and 6 but also started his second nine with back-to-back birdies and added a birdie at No. 18 to get to 5-under on the day. Poulter had a bogey at No. 3 -- only his third of the week -- and birdies at Nos. 7, 11 and 12 en route to his 70. Alvaro Quiros, who shot 67 Sunday, tied with Lee Westwood (68) for third place at 13-under while Rory McIlroy (67) took fifth another stroke back. Martin Kaymer ended up tied for 13th at 6-under but that clinched the yearlong European Tour title for him. Kaymer, who turned 26 on Dec. 28, is the youngest European No. 1 in 31 years. Copyright 2010 by United Press International | Tennis Federer handles Nadal for ATP Finals crown LONDON (UPI) -- Roger Federer dominated the first and third sets Sunday, cruising to his fifth career win of the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals in London. Federer took a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Rafael Nadal to notch his fifth crown of 2010 and the 66th of his career. Federer displayed amazing athleticism in the first set, but Nadal came back to take the second. Each broke the other's serve once in the first two sets. In the third, Federer took a 3-1 lead after taking advantage of a second serve to race to the net and force Nadal to drive a forehand pass wide. The Swiss superstar then held serve and gained two break points in the next game, needing just one to establish a 5-1 lead. After opening a 40-0 lead in the final game, Federer sent a forehand winner into the corner to end the match.
