iPad may help children with autism

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (UPI) -- U.S. researchers say iPads may aid learning among preschool children with autism.

Researchers at Nova Southeastern University's Mailman Segal Institute in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., have started a program to supply new iPads to the university's Baudhuin Preschool -- a provider of services to children with autism spectrum disorders.

"Autism is a lifelong disability that affects the way children communicate and relate to others and the world around them," Roni Leiderman, dean of the institute said in a statement. "We are grateful for the incredible generosity and support of our donors, who are responsible for the success of this initiative."

The preschool's 18 classrooms will be equipped in 2011 with iPads -- tablet computers made by Apple -- with applications, like Proloquo2Go, designed for those with special needs.

The researchers say the iPads will be used to provide an alternative means of communication with teachers for children with communication challenges.

Infants' vitamin D lack ups infection risk

BOSTON (UPI) -- U.S. researchers have linked low vitamin D levels in newborns to higher respiratory infection risks by the age of 3 months.

Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston also associated low vitamin D levels and higher risk of wheezing during early childhood but not with higher risks of developing asthma.

"Our data suggest that the association between vitamin D and wheezing, which can be a symptom of many respiratory diseases and not just asthma, is largely due to respiratory infections," study leader Dr. Carlos Camargo said in a statement. "Acute respiratory infections are a major health problem in children. For example, bronchiolitis -- a viral illness that affects small airway passages in the lungs -- is the leading cause of hospitalization in U.S. infants."

The study, scheduled to be published in January's Pediatrics, indicates infants with levels of vitamin D below 25 nanomoles per liter were twice as likely as those with levels 75 nmol/L or higher to develop respiratory infections by 3 months.

Camargo and colleagues looked at children tracked up to age 5 in the New Zealand Asthma and Allergy Cohort Study. Midwives or study nurses gathered a range of measures -- including 922 samples of umbilical cord blood tested for 25-hydroxyvitamin D.

Vegetarian diet better for kidney disease

INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) -- A U.S. doctor says phosphorus levels stay lower in kidney disease patients who eat a vegetarian diet.

Dr. Sharon Moe of Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis says patients with kidney disease cannot rid their bodies of phosphorus - and need to watch their intake of the mineral found in proteins because high levels can cause heart disease -- but phosphorus content is not listed on food labels.

Moe and colleagues asked nine patients with chronic kidney disease to follow either a vegetarian or meat-based diet for one week, followed by the opposite diet two-to four weeks later. Blood and urine tests were performed at the end of each week on both diets.

The study, scheduled to be published in the Clinical Journal of the American Society Nephrology, found study patients eating proteins from vegetables had lower blood phosphorus levels and decreased phosphorus excretion vs. those eating a meat-based diet. This was true despite both diets having equivalent levels of proteins and phosphorous.

"These results, if confirmed in longer studies, provide rationale for recommending a predominance of grain-based vegetarian sources of protein to patients with chronic kidney disease," the study researchers say in a statement.

The findings suggest protein sources may be more important than amounts and allow increases in protein intake, Moe says.

Allergic? Dust often, with a mask

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (UPI) -- U.S. allergy experts say indoor allergy and asthma triggers can include not only dust, pet dander and mold but noxious fumes from an attached garage.

Members of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology advise moving insecticides, stored gasoline and other irritants to a shed and not running the car in the garage.

They also say staying free of sneezing and sniffles while indoors this winter may require regular dusting. Allergy sufferers should wear a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health-rated N95 mask when dusting.

Boxing up books and knickknacks and getting furniture with non-porous surfaces -- such as leather -- can help in cleaning. Use a high efficiency particulate air filter vacuum. Wash bedding and stuffed animals in hot water every 14 days, the experts say.

"Banish allergens from the bedroom. Keep pets and their dander out, and encase mattresses and pillows with dust-mite proof covers," Dr. Myron Zitt says in a statement. "Limit curtains -- use blinds that can be washed instead."

Zitt and colleagues also advise to:

-- Keep dust mites in check by reducing humidity to below 55 percent. Don't use humidifiers or vaporizers.

-- Use a high efficiency furnace filter with MERV rating of 11 or 12. Change it every three months.
