Teens tried to float on air mattresses

IPSWICH, Australia (UPI) -- Australian police said three teenagers were charged with public nuisance after attempting to float down a river on air mattresses.

Police said two 17-year-olds and an 18-year-old were arrested after jumping into the flood augmented Bremer River in Ipswich and attempting to float to Brisbane, a distance of more than 18 miles, on inflatable bed mattresses, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

Investigators said they received 10 emergency calls about the teens, who were fished out of the water about 9 miles from where they started.

Police said the teens were arrested for the "foolish and dangerous" stunt and will appear in court on public nuisance charges.

Sheriff's calendar showcases dogs

SACRAMENTO (UPI) -- A California sheriff's department said its calendar doesn't have beefy pictures of officers, it has action shots of K-9 unit members.

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department said the $20 calendars, available at www.ssdk9.com, features action shots of K-9 unit dogs and their handlers, the Sacramento Bee reported.

"People have seen fire department calendars," said Deputy Shane Gregory, who appears in the June photo alongside his dog, Ronin. "But we wanted this one to be about the dogs."

Proceeds from the calendar sales go to the non-profit Sacramento Sheriff K9 Association.

Pot grow-op in police official's rental

ABRIDGE, England (UPI) -- English police said a house rented from a high-ranking police official was being used by a marijuana growing operation.

Rod Jarman, a Scotland Yard deputy assistant commissioner, said the Abridge, England, home was rented out through an online agent to a man with a Chinese or Vietnamese name, The Daily Mirror reported.

Jarman said he discovered the operation when a neighbor called in a report of a strange noise at the residence. He said it appeared the house, which contained thousands of pounds of marijuana plants, appeared to have been burglarized by rivals.

"Despite 31 years' experience of policing I didn't see it coming," Jarman said. "It is an absolutely awful thing for people to find their home has been destroyed for somebody else's illegal gain."

Court rules teen's sock fire not arson

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (UPI) -- A New Zealand appellate court tossed out an arson conviction for a teenager who lit his socks on fire and wound up burning down a garage.

The High Court in Wellington overturned the earlier Youth Court ruling convicting the 14-year-old of arson for the April 14 incident in the garage of a friend's parents, The Dominion Post reported.

The boy admitted he lit his socks on fire, which he said he had done several times before without incident, and when he stomped his foot to extinguish the flame it ignited a carpet soaked with gasoline from an earlier spill.

The boy and his friends attempted to extinguish the fire, but the garage burned down, police said.

"(He) was 14 years old, and although his intelligence appeared to the (Youth Court) judge to be average, average 14-year-old boys may do things without any thought of the risks involved, even when they have been told about the risks on other occasions," Justice Jill Mallon said in the High Court ruling.
