Defendants told to pull up pants

NEW YORK (UPI) -- New York court officers said forcing defendants with saggy pants to pull them up is a matter of respecting the court.

Court officers in the Bronx and across the city said defendants whose pants hang low enough to expose underwear are now being told to hike them up or leave the courthouse, the New York Daily News reported Monday.

They said saggy pants are particularly prevalent among defendants in the Bronx.

"When they wear their pants that way, it shows a lack of respect for the court system and a total lack of respect for themselves," said Dennis Quirk, president of the New York State Court Officers Association. "We don't care about fashion trends."

The officers said they are enforcing policies put in place by city judges.

"I don't want jeans that are hanging out and showing their underwear," city Supreme Court Justice Efrain Alvarado said.

Shoppers seek romance in grocery aisles

MINNEAPOLIS (UPI) -- Grocery stores and co-ops in the Minneapolis area said romantic connections are common in the aisles because food is "something that people have in common."

Vivian King, a spokeswoman for Roundy's, which operates Rainbow Foods in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, said it's "natural" for people to hit on each other at the grocery store because "it's around something that people have in common," the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported Monday.

"Several people make the same types of food, and you can have a conversation that's not intimidating," King said.

Elizabeth Archerd, director of membership and marketing for the Wedge Co-op in Minneapolis, said there is a "fair amount of flirting" at the establishment and Liz McMann, Mississippi Market's manager of consumer affairs, said co-op shoppers are likely to make connections because they "know that (others) share some values ... whether environmental or health or the treatment of animals."

Police: Greeter, 83, robbed Walmart store

STATESVILLE, N.C. (UPI) -- Police in North Carolina say an 83-year-old man was arrested after allegedly robbing the Walmart store where he works as a greeter.

Police in Statesville said George Plane Jr. of Mooresville was working at the Crossroads Shopping Center Walmart Sunday evening and at about 7 p.m. he went outside and put on a disguise from his car, The Charlotte (N.C.) Observer reported Monday.

Investigators said Plane approached a garden center employee, pointed a gun at the worker and demanded money from the cash register. Police said the suspect fired at least one shot into the air before fleeing with the cash.

Police spotted Plane's car a short distance from the store and he surrendered after a brief standoff, officers said.

Statesville police Capt. T.C. Souther said he was surprised to learn Plane's age.

"He appeared to be in good shape," Souther told WCNC-TV, Charlotte.

Police: Naked woman threw rocks, teeth

NAPLES, Fla. (UPI) -- Authorities in Florida said they arrested an intoxicated woman who shed her clothes, tossed rocks at people and pulled out her own teeth to throw into a canal.

Collier County sheriff's deputies said they responded to a call about a naked woman throwing rocks in the Bayshore area of Naples about 8 p.m. Saturday and they arrived to find Tina Belinda Masta, 46, wrapped in a blanket on a dock, the Naples Daily News reported Monday.

The deputies said Masta, who appeared intoxicated and smelled of alcohol, opened the blanket, exposing herself to them, and told them she had taken out some of her teeth and tossed them into the canal. She "kept picking at her teeth and asked to use some pliers," deputies said.

Masta was arrested and charged with disorderly intoxication. A neighbor brought her some clothes while she was sitting in the patrol car, deputies said.
