We are taking a trip to a private trilobite quarry near Delta on March 12th, this Saturday. A New Dig charges $200 per person to dig in their commercial layer. Considering the number and quality of trilobites that are easily picked up there, that is a bargain. But, if you go with our group, the cost is ONLY $55 per person. If you have 2 or more in your party the price drops to $50 per person. Kids 7 and under are free. Kids are often better at finding trilobites than adults. When my son was 7, he found 6 trilobites in perfect condition. Each was over 2 inches long. He also found dozens of really great trilobites around 1 inch long and thousands of partials. This is typical of what was found by most people on the last trip. One talented (or lucky) guy brought home about 200 complete trilobites, most over 1 inch and many over 2 inches. Some other things found there included sponges, rare trilobites, track marks, corals, worms, fossil algae, gogia sp. (rare sea lily flower heads) etc. We will get to hunt through new material dug up just for us. This material is not sorted before we go through it, unlike some other pay-to-dig places. There's nothing like being the first person to see a freshly exposed trilobite. When you split open the shale and see a trilobite, you are the first to have seen it in 550 million years (talk about antiques)! We are limited to 50 people (over 7), so the trip is first-come first-serve. We had to turn people away last time. Payment must be made when you reserve your slot. Payments are non-refundable as we are limited on space, and we have to pay for the slots in advance. For collecting tips, check out our rockhounding information page at www.rocks4u.com/rockhounding.htm. There are over 15,000 species of trilobites worldwide. Many collectors and experts believe Utah is home to as many as 600 of those species. An individual species can be described from a single trilobite or even a part of a trilobite. The fun of trilobites is that everyone recognizes them. I like to say that they are 550,000,000 year old roaches, but they are actually ancestors of the Horseshoe Crab. Utah trilobites range in size from less than 1/8 inch to a whopping 12+ inches. In recent years some very rare trilobites (olinoides sp.) were discovered in the Little Drum Mountains that exceed 12 inches. At our collecting site there are several species including: Elrathia kingi, Modocia typicallus, Altiocculus, Peronopsis, Alokistocare, Agnostus, Asaphiscus wheeleri, and more. Other fossils found in the Utah trilobite beds include corals, sponges, Gogia sp. (Sea lily flower head), Chancelloria (Jelly Fish), several different brachiopods, worm tracks, trilobite tracks, star fish, jelly fish, and more. |
