Mattel's Ken doll turns 50

DENVER (UPI) -- Ken, Barbie's smiling, compliant boyfriend through decades of political, societal and cultural changes, turns 50 this week, Denver museum historians note.

Historians at the Lakewood Heritage Center, a museum exploring the 20th century, say they will hold a party Friday for Mattel's 12-inch boy-toy, complete with cake and punch for the public, The Denver Post reported Sunday.

The museum notes how Ken has evolved with changing times.

"You can see how Ken changed over the years," said Jeff Fields, who runs the shop for Lakewood. "He was a skinny, tall dude at first. In the 1980s, he was scruffy and more buff. Now he's blond and blue-eyed again."

Mattel had Barbie break it off with Ken in 2004, designing a new beau, Aussie boogie boarder Blaine. But not to be outdone, Ken underwent a Hollywood makeover, and, with cunning and guile as shown in the 2010 film "Toy Story 3," won her back, the Post said.

"For nearly five decades, Ken has been Barbie's perfect arm candy," Mattel said in a news release.

In sickness and health and over Skype

FULLERTON, Calif. (UPI) -- A California couple have wed over Skype, with the bride in church and the groom in the hospital.

Helen Oh, 27, exchanged vows with Samuel Kim via video conferencing Saturday at Grace Ministries in Fullerton, with her father officiating, The Orange County Register reported.

"Helen, my wife, I'm very, very sorry for not being able to walk you down the aisle or stand at the altar, but today is just one day. We're going to live for a very long time," said Kim, also 27. "I promise to be a perfect husband from now on to make up for this."

"I completely expected to postpone our wedding, but my fiancee, she really insisted," Kim said from his room at UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange. He declined to explain why he was there, but said he was in quarantine for a few weeks.

About 500 guests attended the wedding, with many flying in from abroad. Kim missed the reception, but Oh visited him in the hospital Saturday evening.

Graduates wear gowns of recycled plastic

MIAMI (UPI) -- Officials at Florida International University say this year's graduating seniors will be the first to get caps and gowns made entirely of recycled plastic.

In May the 4,500 students are expected to attend commencement wearing apparel made completely from an earth-friendly fabric spun from pellets melted down from recycled plastic bottles, The Miami Herald reported Sunday.

"This is an innovative way to show our commitment to sustainability and make an impact given the size of our graduating classes,'' said Provost Douglas Wartzok. "These gowns truly make us worlds ahead on our continued commitment to be an environmentally conscious university."

The fabric used to make the caps and gowns is called GreenWeaver which feels like traditional fabric. It is spun from molten plastic pellets derived from an average of 23 plastic bottles per gown and made in the United States, the newspaper said.

Woman arrested for impersonating dead mom

FERNDALE, Wash. (UPI) -- A Washington state woman was arrested after allegedly dressing as her deceased mother so she could open a bank account, investigators said.

Investigators said 59-year-old Loewen B. Craft was wearing a gray wig and makeup to make her appear older when she arrived at the Industrial Credit Union branch in Ferndale, Wash., allegedly to open an account in her deceased mother's name, The Bellingham (Wash.) Herald reported.

She was booked into the Whatcom County Jail on suspicion of first-degree identity theft, criminal impersonation and several counts of forgery, Sheriff Bill Elfo said.

Craft's mother, Betty Becker, died in 2007. Elfo said Craft collected more than $145,000 in benefits from her mother's Chevron Oil pension fund.

Craft allegedly obtained a false identity in her mother's name before her mother died.

Investigators caught on to the alleged scheme while investigating an unrelated arson case, the newspaper said. A detective discovered that Becker had died and notified Chevron officials of the alleged fraud.

Chevron froze Craft's accounts, allegedly leading her to attempt to open a new account at ICU.

ICU employees aided in Craft's arrest by asking her to come to the branch to complete additional paperwork. Officers were waiting for her and took her into custody Wednesday.

She was in the Whatcom County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bond.
