SQL Azure: Big Data - Sharding/Federation
Sharding or application-aware partitioning is an integral part of the scale-out strategy for SQL Server, starting with SQL Azure later in 2011. In this session, Dave presents an introduction to sharding patterns, and explores how some existing large scale applications already benefit from sharding. Dave will then discuss the design and capabilities of the SQL Azure Federations sharding platform, examining how this platform helps address some of the hard challenges that devs and admins face when implementing a sharding solution on their own and with existing libraries. Time permitting, Dave will touch on Microsoft’s vision for federations past v1 and how federations will co-exist with future scale-out solutions.

Outsource Offshore: Business such as Rentacoder, eLance and Odesk have enabled those in the know to dramatically change their profitability and risk profile by outsourcing tasks offshore. Whether its having your own personal assistant and clerical staff in India, or having software engineers and designers in Russia, offshore support is only a mouse click away. But is it as easy as simply knocking a quick spec to have a website concept created for $200, or are their a brand new set of skills you need to have and risks you need to manage if you take this path.
Tim Ferris of the 4-hour work week may well promote its simple to outsourcing anything that bores you, but how are Australian's actually outsourcing offshore to improve their lives, opportunities and profitability? Our experienced, successful panel will examine this and other questions on the night in an open forum format so you will get your questions answered.
Melbourne Cocoaheads (Free)
When: Thursday 10 Mar 11 at 6:30:00 PM
Where: ThoughtWorks, Level 15, 303 Collins Street, Melbourne
Just giving a quick heads-up that ThoughtWorks has kindly offered their offices for the next Melbourne Cocoaheads meeting on the 10th March. Once again there's pizza, beer and a whole-lot-a great discussion on Mac and iOS development on offer. You'll probably need to be swiped in that time of night at the door, so call Stewart Gleadow (0421 634 361) if there's no one there.
So far I have one talk lined up. Grant Adam from Jelly Biscuits will be giving a talk on their interactive books. He'll shed some light on developing cross platform applications using Unity and how they've fared on both the iTunes App Store and the Apple App Store. Still looking for one or two additional speakers, so if you've been itching to get up and present, please drop me a line. We might also do a few lightning talks at the start, so if you want to quickly talk about something you've been working on or just get up and talk without having to prepare a slide deck, there'll be a chance to do that too.
