Giants lose Sandoval to broken hand

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- San Francisco Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval will be out 4-6 weeks following surgery on a broken hand, the team said Saturday.

Giants head trainer Dave Groeschner told the San Jose Mercury News in Washington that Sandoval broke the hamate bone in his right hand and will undergo surgery as soon as Tuesday.

Groeschner said part of the bone would be removed and it was likely Sandoval would be swinging the bat with discomfort for the rest of the season even after his return.

The Giants recalled infielder Ryan Rohlinger from Class AAA Fresno to take Sandoval's spot on the roster.

The injury was the second in a matter of days to a San Francisco infielder. Third baseman Mark DeRosa was placed on the DL this week with a wrist inflammation.

Ravens owner miffed over Bears trade snafu

NEW YORK (UPI) -- The owner of the Baltimore Ravens chided his counterparts in Chicago over their muffed attempt at a trade during this week's NFL draft.

Steve Bisciotti told the Baltimore Sun the McCaskey family's apology for the aborted trade was insufficient, but was "probably end of story."

"I'm disappointed in the Bears and the McCaskeys," Bisciotti said. "It is in my opinion a deviation from their great legacy."

The Chicago Tribune said Saturday that Bears General Manager Jerry Angelo rejected NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell's suggestion the Bears offer some compensation to the Ravens, saying his team had broken no rules.

The two teams had been set to swap first-round selections on Friday but the Bears failed to formally confirm the trade in time and the deal was voided. The final result was Baltimore feeling chiseled out of the fourth-round pick they would have gotten from Chicago.

Watson's final birdie ties Simpson in N.O.

AVONDALE, La. (UPI) -- Bubba Watson's 18th-hole birdie Saturday pulled him into a share of the lead with Webb Simpson after three rounds of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

Simpson birdied five straight holes starting with No. 3 but it wasn't enough to hold off Watson, who rebounded from a dicey start to card a round of 2-under-par 70, tying him with Simpson at 12-under 204 after 54 holes.

Simpson ended the round with a 5-under 67, overcoming windy conditions to collect five straight birdies early in the day followed by 11 consecutive pars.

John Rollins grabbed sole possession of third place at minus-11 after firing a 3-under 69.

Tied for fourth place at minus-10 after three rounds were George McNeill (65), Charles Howell III (66), K.J. Choi (67), Tommy Gainey (68), Steve Stricker (68) and Matt Jones (69).

Hockey

NHL: Boston 7, Philadelphia 3

PHILADELPHIA (UPI) -- David Krejci scored twice and added a pair of assists Saturday and Boston pounded Philadelphia 7-3 in Game 1 of their conference semifinal series.

Brad Marchand added two goals and a helper and Patrice Bergeron contributed three assist for the Bruins, who are seeking to avenge an historic collapse against the Flyers in last year's Eastern Conference semifinals.

Nathan Horton, Mark Recchi and Gregory Campbell also scored as Boston netted four straight goals starting with Horton's tally in the closing seconds of the first period.

Tim Thomas stopped 31-of-34 shots for the third-seeded Bruins, who led 3-games-to-none in last year's series but then dropped four straight to Philadelphia -- only the third time in NHL history that had happened.

Danny Briere, James van Riemsdyk and Mick Richards scored for the second-seeded Flyers.

Philadelphia netminder Brian Boucher was pulled late in the second period after yielding five goals on 23 shots. Sergei Bobrovsky came in and stopped 8-of-10 shots the rest of the way.

Soccer

MLS: Philadelphia 1, San Jose 0

CHESTER, Pa. (UPI) -- Sebastien Le Toux scored on a penalty kick in the 76th minute Saturday and the Philadelphia Union hung on for a 1-0 decision over San Jose.

Philadelphia's Amobi Okugo tried to play the ball across the 6-yard box after being forced to the end line, but the referee ruled it was blocked by a handball.

That set up a penalty shot for Le Toux, who easily scored for the Union (4-1-1), who continued their hot start with their fourth shutout in six games.

The Union won despite playing short-handed the entire second half after Jordan Harvey was issued a red card for an altercation with San Jose defender Chris Leitch.

The Earthquake fell to 1-4-2.

Verdasco, Del Porto win Estoril semifinals

ESTORIL, Portugal (UPI) -- Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina held off Pablo Cuevas 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) Saturday to advance to the finals of the Estoril Open in Portugal.

The eighth-seeded former U.S. Open champ will face second-seeded Fernando Verdasco of Spain in Sunday's final.

Verdasco had to complete his suspended quarterfinals match against Kevin Anderson before facing Milos Raonic in the semis. Verdasco beat the seventh-seeded Anderson 6-7 (2-7), 6-2, 6-3 and then advanced to the finals when Canadian Raonic withdrew with a back injury after the first set.

Raonic also had completed a quarterfinal match that was suspended Friday night due to a rain delay and gathering darkness.

Verdasco will play in his second finals of the year Sunday. Del Porto won his eighth career title in February at Delray Beach.
