Factory Farms in the Sea Take Action to Stop It Today! May 17, 2011 Dear Indiana, Ask your representative to stop the spread of factory farms! Factory fish farms are like other factory farms on land, but in the open ocean. We've seen what factory farms do to our health and the environment. Take action today to stop the same destruction to our oceans! Imagine loading a gigantic mesh sphere with thousands of carnivorous fish and sticking it in the ocean to interact with the wild ocean ecology. The same problems that come from factory farms on land — overuse of antibiotics, non-natural feed, tainted water, rampant disease, etc. — cannot be avoided in ocean fish farms either. Unfortunately, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is trying hard to open U.S. federal waters to this destructive form of farming. They argue that we need these fish farms to feed the growing population and relieve pressure on wild fish stocks. But what do the farmed fish eat? Non-natural feed combined with wild fish! That's right. Rather than overfishing the big fish, we'd just be overfishing the little ones that the wild carnivorous fish need to eat. Fortunately, a bill that would prevent NOAA and other agencies from approving factory fish farms in our oceans was introduced earlier this year.
