Although it's an ancient adage, "don't count your chickens before they hatch" is
acutely apropos this week.
In surprising announcements, the US Department of Justice filed to block the AT&T/T-Mobile
merger that most everyone thought was inevitable, and a US Federal Appeals court
sided with SAP and slashed damages they owed Oracle by $1 Billion, deeming Oracle's
award "grossly excessive."
Speaking of damages, Hurricane Irene tore up the East Coast of the US, but not
before carriers were able to push the message of disaster preparedness to their
customers through multiple channels, and despite damage to more than 6,500 cell
towers, no 9-1-1 centers lost service during the storm.
In other news, DISH network is going LTE-advanced, Hulu launched a subscription
service in Japan, and strategies to expand M2M and cloud services offerings continue
to drive acquisitions.
